When Sol says he doesn't care, that means he does. The memetical stereotype applied to Sol is the opposite of Ky, where he has connections to the world as it is, was, and forever will be, since he's very old and pretty much indestructible, while Ky's the war orphan with a merely theoretical tie to the world as his teachers assure him it will be 'eventually.' He claims great piety and understanding, but the viewer calls his bluff as they do Sol's claim that he doesn't care.
Sol's an inventor who had to learn how to survive in a hostile environment, and made himself into an improvised weapon, while Ky's a master-crafted weapon that doesn't have much purpose now that the great enemy's been defeated. Both characters grow out of their stereotypes over the course of almost 20 years of story, but you get a flashpoint return to their origins in Rev 2's after story.
Basically, it's all archetypes and themes that were very popular with 80s animes. It's interesting to note that while Sol's mellowed of signicantly, and actually developed some character, Ky's managed to stick to his basic 101 'bad christian' stereotype regardless of the story's twists and turns. Even in the contemporary king Ky storyline, he shamelessly breaks whatever rule or law he feels like.
Sadly not many people here care about the classic GG lore stuff because most of them came in contact with GG by playing Xrd first (and I do not think that many people read through the ingame wiki stuff).
I was actually quite dissapointed with the Xrd story arc, mostly because it felt kinda like a sidestory and it concentrated way too much on the new and rather boring villains like Bedman and Ariels with them doing quite little to accomplish anything imo.

(the Ariels VS Sol/Ky/Sin fight was awesome though, I hope she becomes playable as the next newcomer char)
*spoilers end*
and most of the neutral or kind of evil characters from previous GG entries (like possessed Zato, Raven, That Man, I-No etc) were turned into 'good' / hero characters in Xrd and most rivalries were finished or not present anymore (like Sol VS Ky, Millia VS Zato etc) which is understandable because of story progression but I liked that a lot in previous GG games and Xrd kinda lacks now in the 'evil' char department.
Until After Story happened with the Sol and Ky event, my jaw literally dropped and I was left in awe. They did not forget their roots after all and it was like a little present for people who actually played the old games and I do hope that future After Story parts (or the next Xrd entry) concentrates more on those old rivalries again.

I am happy to see that the plot actually goes back to the X2 stuff now with the way that Rev ended, with I-no being kind of evil again after knowing the truth about herself, Justice being alive and selfaware inside of Jacko / Aria (which you can see for yourself if you watch Ravens Episode Mode intro in Rev2), so I have hope that original Justice makes a comeback, and Sol VS Ky being not finished yet and lastly the Sol VS That Man encounter.
You got the feeling this is a side story? :D Dude, the story made quantum leaps and is nearly over. The main villain of the entire series was defeated and we finally got That Mans real name.
There is not much left in the main story that needs to be explored. Basically the only things we dont know about are who the Original is and what exactly went wrong with Justices and Sols creation (which is hopefully explored in the next After Story with Sol and That Man).
I also would like to know the exact timeline and details of how Dizzy came to be since it confuses me but I think thats a bit too delicate...
