I tend to play singleplayer and used this guide to find my car. It's a pain because when you log out, your car despawns and you will lose anything in the car, so clear it out when you're done playing the game. The location where the car spawns is clear of enemies except one wolf, so I just log out inside the house there.
You'll need a car battery, set of keys, and spark plugs to start the car. The car usually spawns with one or more of these, but it's random. You'll also need to head to refuel the car as it always seems to be low on fuel, so bring a cannister for fuel. The station to get feul is guarded by 2 looters who will respawn after 10 minutes or something.
