It's fun, but if you get the black screen what you need to do is either take off the headset and look at your monitor or use the desktop button on the steam overlay (bottom left corner, icon looks like a browser window), then navigate your hand to the clipboard and choose options. From there you go to advanced, and turn off bloom. Then you should be able to see in your headset. This only fixes the game up until the tooth transplant, so before you get to there you need to make sure bloom is off, anti aliasing is off, and color correction is off. Turn on everything else and set shadows to high. Then you should be able to see in all of the surgeries and reception, but if you fail you will get the black screen again. Just repeat what you did initially to change the graphics settings (taking off headset or using desktop view in the headset), only this time you just need to choose "menu options" on the side of the fail clipboard, then choose "restart" or "exit". Keep in mind that by using the desktop view in VR will require you to pre-position your hands where you think the button is, open desktop view, then go back in game to move your hands because, obviously when you open the steam overlay you can't control your in-game hands. I've also heard that you still get a black screen when you pause, but i couldn't test it myself because I don't have a pause button, only an overlay button (because I play on the Quest 2 with ALVR, so I have an oculus overlay button and a steam overlay button). I read this in a steam guide and thought it would be helpful to make it into a review so more people could see it, because i know not everyone goes to the steam guide page for a game, specially before they buy it. If you found this helpful, then go to the steam guides page and support the post there too, I just wanted to add a few more details and put it in a more viewed place. Anyways, the game is fun, but keep in mind that the black screen glitch almost definately wont be fixed ever by the devs, and i don't think anyone wants to mod in a patch for it cus let's be real, this game is pretty dead, but i still have a lot of fun with it. I got it on sale from humble bundle, and i'd say if you can also get it for $8 it's worth it.

For those whom can't play due to a black screen loading at launch .. try this ..

1. Go to your steam game library and find the game. ( Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality )

2. Right click mouse on "Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality" and select "Properties..."

3. Select "Betas" and change it to "OG_SSER - OG_SSER" & install it.

4. Launch SteamVR and then launch the game and it should load successfully.

The issue appears to be the default resolution the graphics are set to within the standard game executable. When I changed the resolution to 1920 x 1080 within the games graphics settings my VR display immediately went black.

I uninstalled and re-installed the second beta that is listed "SSER_BETA - SSER_BETA" and was able to load the game just fine again. When I attempted to uninstall and re-install the first beta release to reset the graphics settings it failed to load so I was only able to force the graphics settings within the game to reset after replacing beta 1 with beta 2. Afterwards, I uninstalled Beta 2 and installed the original release and that loaded up fine this time around.

Works fine with the HP Reverb G2 and the original WMR motion controllers. Do what I stated above and then do the following too if you can't load the default installation.


In order to resolve the VR headset going dark I did the following .. ( NVIDIA RTX 2070 )


1. Launch the NVIDIA Control Panel App in Windows 10.


Navigate into "Manage 3D Settings" on the top left of the screen.


2. Click on the "Program Settings" tab and click the "Add" button and then click "Browse".


3. Navigate into the Steam path where the game executable file is located.


Example


E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Surgeon Simulator Experience Reality


Now select the "SSER" file.


This will allow you to custom configure graphics settings for that specific game.


All you want to do is change "Antialiasing - Mode" to "Override any application settings"


That should also auto change your "Antialiasing - Setting" to "2X"


Apply changes


4. Navigate into the Steam path where the game executable file is located via Windows.

Right click mouse on "SSER" and select "Properties" and click into the "Compatibility" tab.


Check mark "Disable fullscreen optimizations"


Apply it and ok it


5. Configure your floor settings by putting on your VR headset and launching the "Windows Mixed Reality Home". Select the "Floor" option and setup your WMR height as required.


6. Now launch SteamVR and select the game "Surgeon Simulator Experience Reality"


7. Step into the blue light behind you. If you can't you need to reset your standing position. You can do that via the SteamVR overlay reset option. ( Simply click down on your right WMR motion controller stick and aim at the reset icon on your Steam overlay. Press the trigger to initate the reset. )


8. Once you load the game successfully change the settings as follows ..


TIP:


KEEP YOUR HAND STEADY OVER THE OPTIONS AS YOU TOGGLE THEM ON OR OFF. IF YOUR VR DISPLAY GOES BLACK, TOGGLE IT BACK OFF IMMEDIATELY ! )


First test the settings with ..


RESOLUTION: 1024X768


*** If that works successfully without crashing during surgery & you are able to complete the initial surgey you can try changing your resolution to "1280X720" afterwards. First make sure you can complete at least one surgery without the VR headset going dark. You want to keep your video resolution to "Low" or "Medium". Do not select "High" or your headset may go dark.


BLOOM: ON

VIGNETTING: OFF

COLOR CORRECTION: ON

SSAO: OFF

ANTI ALIASING: OFF

SPECTATORS: OFF ( UP TO YOU )

SHADOWS = HIGH


*** I noticed that if I click my menu button on my WMR motion controller during surgery, my VR headset goes dark but if I click it again it comes back to normal and I can continue the surgery. ( The hamburger menu | Button with 3 lines )

I've wanted Surgeon Sim for VR ever since I got my Vive, but now that it's here, it's a bit of a disappointment to be honest. It feels like an early access title with very little content and lots of bugs.

It's WAY too easy for your virtual hands to get stuck because the game thinks you're trying to clip through something. The collision is really, really stingy and it makes the whole experience feel very clunky.

I also don't like the grip mechanics here... In the original game, it made sense to have full control of all your fingers, but here, it only gets in the way. The trigger should be used to grip with the thumb+index finger and the thumb pad should be used to close the rest of the hand. Having to hold the grip buttons to keep your hands closed is tiring and annoying.

I'm also having some pretty weird performance issues. My framerate keeps dropping even though my computer is MORE than capable of running much more visually impressive games in VR than this (I have a GTX 1070).

Cannot recommend right now. Wait for some patches and more content.
