Can you play this without VR?
Haven't bought into the VR gimmick just yet, but I would like to play this game. So can you play without VR?

Trust me. VR isn't a gimmick. People who think it's a gimmick are the people who have never tried a VR headset. Trust me. If you ever have a chance to try the vive or the rift do it. Seeing is believing.
I show off my Vive to all my friends, because if I didn't show it off, they'd forever make fun of it. After they try it out, they instantly change their minds and want to have one of their own.

Anyway, VR isn't a gimmick to Vive users. It may be a gimmick to some people and some platforms, but it's definitely the future of gaming and possibly the future of social networking. I've seen AltSpace become rather popular since the Vive and Oculus came out, and it's getting support for practically every kind of VR controller there is, including Leap Motion and Oculus Touch. AltSpace has itself spread to mobile devices, too, which shows that not all VR games have to require a Vive. However, Accounting is not going to be as awesome without roomscale and roomscale controllers. It's basically a demo for what the Vive offers.
Just gotta throw my two cents in XD the biggest difference i felt when making the leap from 2d screens and 3d vr was "size". when something like a creature, tree or house etc is big. It's limited to the size of the screen it's diplayed on. if there was lets say a 6.6 ft guy standing infront of you ( using a fps veiw) on your 60inch screen. you would still only perceive them as being only afew feet heigh in real scale ( get out your measuring tape, see how big they are) but in VR you will perceive them as big as they would ment to be and that makes a massive difference.

Play some subnautica on your 2d screen. 6 ft long bone shark swims by you, no big deal just alittle fright. now play on VR when that 6 ft shark swims past you gotta be kidding me your not shaken and immediately looking for land XD
the Wii, was a gimmick. overall anyway till it was upgraded with the 1:1 movement.

VR, its a lifestyle choice.

my only hope is the resolution on the headsets can affordably be upgraded to 2k or higher. 1080p is fine for now though, most things look amazing, games like Raw Data have a good concept and graphic quality.

that said i do play in minimum space and certain titles that play better with a larger area are a bit tricky to play but i've managed so far on the bigger hit titles worth paying 30-40$ for.

It's two tiny screens on your face that lets you look around with your head movements. You walk around the room with wii nunchucks in your hand. That just screams novelty gimmick.
Also which would you rather use a mouse or joystick to control your screen or shell out $800 bucks so you can do the same thing with your head, most people will go with the first option? I'm not jumping on the VR train because I'd rather not have my face be all sweaty and going to work with an oval mark around my eyes like a frickin raccoon, that's not sexy.
If anyone actually defended VR they're just trying to justify their expensive investment or just fetishizing the idea of the potential for the product.

You know, I basically thought the same thing, until I actually used VR. Watching the 2d videos does not at all do it justice. There's a lot more to VR than just using your head to look around. Because it's in 3d, it really feels like you're right there inside the game. It's truly amazing. You really shouldn't bash it so bad when you haven't even tried it. Like I said, you really can't even begin to comprehend how incredible it is until you've tried it. To answer your question, I'm finding it very hard to play any of my non-vr games anymore. I've had my VIve for about 2 weeks now and I haven't even played a single non-vr game since then. I'm currently downloading VorpX so that I can play some of my non-vr games in vr. Yeah, it's a ton of money but it was worth every penny.

Indeed, thats what you think. Untill you are holding an AK-47 in VR, you see it in 3D right in front of you that moves to the milimeter precice to the movement of your hands.

Ducking for cover physically when being shot at, reloading your weapon, not pressing R, but grabbing the empty mag out of your rifle and tossing it away, grabbing a full clip out of your ammo pouch and popping it in your weapon to then glock it,....

It's a new way of experiancing games, really being in them!

Fallout 4 is going to be supported by VR to name a thing and it is going to be frigging awesome!
well, Fallout 4 might not follow the current trend hopefully, but a lot of game that go from non-VR to VR capable, only utilise the HMD and dont use the peripheral controllers, they still take a gamepad or keyboard + mouse. i try not to support this unless they manage to do a good job of it. how the hell would one play a complicated game like say, mechwarrior or starcitizen, with a VR headset, but then have to know where 30 keys on the keyboard are?
OP asks simple question then proceeds to ♥♥♥♥ on VR and eventually says he's tried it at LEAST three times!
your right the question is simple, this cant be played without a VR headset and motion controllers. it is literally impossible. but you know, lots of people think computer programmers and scientists can make Water into wine in many other ways too.
You can"t even though if the devs weren't lazy it should be possible. Resident Evi VII is possibly the best VR game and you play with and without VR. Same with Dirt Rally.
Same with that VR mod that came form DOOM 3

Same with Fallout 4, Skyrim en DOOM 2016

everything you just listed, was not made for VR, VR was tacked on later. this from the ground up, was made to run on VR.

no pushing WASD, no left clicky, no space bar, just wavey hands and measureable physics.

you can live in your world of everything VR should be made non VR too, but thats not an industry moving forward mentality, thats an amish way of looking at it.

why move your arms and upper body like you do every day to entertain yourself?

immersion.

besides these guys arent makin any kind of real money off this, its free. its a demo of their level of skill when it comes to making decent looking video games. if they did make a non VR version i'd charge money. what a wasted effort.
I don't think it's a stupid question because some of us cannot afford $800 for a headset or have a rig capable of VR. In addition, we should have a choice to use VR or traditional setup, some games have dual capabilities why can't all VR games? Or an emulator can be developed?
VR isn't a gimmick and there's not much gameplay in this so watching a playthough on youtube will get you most of the content.

Because the control set up is completly different. It's like the difference between a car and a plane and asking why you can't drive on the clouds. You'd quickly understand if you'd try VR.

your right, not everyone does. its something to aspire to being able to do.

do you think when a car company makes a 500k$ its target audience is joe everybody? no.

VR is targeted to the crowd that makes a living, gets things done, and makes dosh doing it. if you dont like the fact you cannot afford VR, take a look at your life, your expenses, and see what you could cut back on for a year and total up what that saves you.

800$ for a HMD to call your own will be for about 40% of those people that complain. the other 60% are lazy do nothings feeding off free cash programs for a living, either by choice or not in which case, video games should be a last end priority.
Whether or not VR is a "gimmick" right now or the technology just isn't there yet, I still encourage you to at least try it out somewhere if you haven't done so already. True, we're years, maybe even a decade from mass adoption or a sub $300 but that doesn't mean it isn't pretty spectacular right now.

Have you ever used Google Cardboard/Daydream/Samsung Gear? Those are all VR options under $20 that use your phone as the screen. The resolution is much, much worse and the screen isn't as smooth (60hz vs 90hz) and there aren't any controllers but it's definitely fun nonetheless
