burdigala
whats the best way to get past burdigala? no matter what i try i can not ever seem to get enough armor and weapons for the demands from Rome. i usually start out by setting a bunch of timber camps and start making furniture for exports and timber as well, and then importing iron... help?

leave enough space for 3 patrician homes in the water zone.
5 timber camps and 3 furniture to start. then start importing iron and wool.
Sell armor and weapons until Romes demands start. then satisfy Romes demands.
Your will have to go up to 2-3000. Dont build military yet Just bribe the enemy if they are going to attack for 2 times. And get back into profit and get Favor up to about 46-48.
After that then you can start building your army _heavy inventory, the rest is straight forward.

here [caesar4.heavengames.com]

I am unaffiliated with the site in any capacity, but I never play Caesar 4 without it.

I have returned to this game again, and I refuse to believe the developers of this otherwise great game actually put anything resembling thought into this scenario. I have completed it multiple times now, but no other developer-made city even remotely approaches this level's difficulty. It is beyond mind-boggling.

I've been playing Caesar 4 since it came out (not on Steam). Burdigala is a bit tricky, but I just beat it easily on Hard. The key is to ignore Rome's requests and demands. Make heavy infantry, which will easily defeat the first two invasions; I lost zero soldiers, even with only 10 men in the first attack. You have to make the bridge, so you can attack the first two companies of Gauls.

Sell as much timber as you can, and max furniture. I think you only need two large villas, a complete wall, and a luxury market selling furniture, at the end. This will raise your Prosperity enough. Import enough pottery to max your Pleb housing, but not too much so it's costly.

Raise your Favor with gifts, not by fulfilling demands.

@OhhJim

While there may be an easy way to complete Burdigala, even on Hard, the problem is that you have to know an easy way to complete this city. That means that you either require good knowledge of the game or a guide. I am willing to accept that I could be wrong about the developers not putting thought into this city, but I stand by my statement that no other developer-made city in the game is even remotely close in difficulty. I suspect that anyone new to the game would agree that Burdigala has a massive spike in difficulty to it and then after that it's "easy mode" in comparison.

I believe your intention was civility and that is my intention as well, but I do want to add a couple links to show that I know how to play the game. I have one city where 64 Grand Mansions are covered by 1 Coliseum, here. There is also Valencia, my first attempt at playing the game on hard difficulty, and it required 18K population; I have 1 Coliseum for exactly 18K people. I played a few of the scenarios that AmenusUK posted, all on hard. I've completed the Economic campaign on Hard, but I've not completed the Military campaign on Hard yet.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the input. Also, again, it is not my intention to be uncivil.

For those who noticed that I don't have the mouse next to my name, I have the game via GoG. I've added the game to Steam as a non-Steam game and that allows me to take screenshots via the Steam overlay.

You are probably right that it is the hardest city. But isn't it true that it's not the first map, so a player would have some experience with the game before encountering Burdigala? Also, there's no real trick to the city, other than ignoring Rome's requests. The Gaulish invasions are actually quite weak-I beat 20 light infantry and 20 skirmishers with my own 20 light infantry, and took no losses.

Anyway, I just didn't want people to think it's an impossible map. I think I failed a couple times before winning, which is not abnormal for me. Also, I think I recall that it was the map included with the demo. I could be wrong about that.

Burdigala is the third military map of the Republic campaign. Imagine if Carthago was the third economic map of the Republic campaign, or if Nicomedia was the third economic map of the Empire campaign. Either of those would be brutal. I don't think the game adequately prepares a new player for Burdigala's difficulty spike.
