The thing is, Redout is kind of different to other Zero G racers in that the machines actually do handle as if though they were Zero G, so if you're going full steam ahead and corner a hard left...it'll take you a while before you actually start going left (depending on your speed, blah blah weight distribution etc.). At that the handling is also quite stiff meaning you have to implement correct driving lines most of the time, the game is not forgiving about how you steer unlike other Zero G racers, which mostly just test how fast you can react.
All of this means that there is a lot more emphasis on actually testing your driving technique rather than just testing your reflexes via increase of speed (although don't be mistaken for thinking there isn't any of that, Redout is pretty damn fast regardless). In short: It doesn't matter how fast you react, if you don't take the correct driving line around a corner (also accounting for weight distribution on zero g) you're going to crash, and sometimes it's not even possible to flatout a corner regardless of what you do anyway so you have to consider things like how best to crash to maintain speed.
I think the best option for you would honestly be to just try out the demo, it let's you try an easy circuit with the full set of tier 2 machines (minus the dlc one):
On the right side of the page there is an option to "Download demo", give it a shot.

edit: Oh, also I would probably be an idiot not to mention that a large part of steering in this game has to do with strafing. Akin to F-Zero's strafing, Redout allows you to adjust your left and right positioning without the change of direction, with Zero G physics this allows you to effectively combine it with steering to drift around corners which to say the least, is quite useful.
Wipeout imo, was the best racing game to ever exist, and I'm pretty biased since playing DIRT Rally in VR.
Also thanks for this post. I didn't know the Wipeout collection was a thing. I just ordered it.
Personally I prefer Redout more. It's 1/3rd F-Zero, 1/3rd Wipeout, and 1/3rd it's own thing. The pitch mechanics with the right analog stick are a really great addition and the tracks in Redout have a lot of verticality to them much like F-Zero.
I would also note that Wipeout never really fully clicked with me. The game always felt too loose / floaty for my tastes. I don't feel like I'm driving so much as I am wrestling the vehicle under control. Wipeout is a game I feel like I'd be really into but whenever I play it it's failed to sink it's hooks into me the way F-Zero did.
Played the demo. Looks fine. Just kind of difficult getting a hardened opinion from one map, gamemode and car. Dunno. Really feels cool though and I like the soundtrack. I dont mind the controls. I seem to be handling myself fine. Didn't die anytime in my trial round. Was fast into the controls and the speed. However, guess the map is kind of simple.
I will think about buying it.
Yeah, I guess I will definitely buy WipeOut eventually. The omega collection just screams for getting bought. Not entirely sure about Redout yet. The fact that there are no weapons is a bit meh, on the other hand its kind of difficult handling those with such a speed. In the end I am just not sure if its worth 20 euro for me in this situation. The demo gave me a feeling but I am not entirely sure yet.
Also, I found Redout harder to get used to at first, but it's crazy hard in VR.
If you don't hit every single speed pad, you're almost doomed to fail. The AI is just mean!
If Sony said "Wipeout for PSVR" though, I'd go buy a PS4 Pro and PSVR right now. Shut up and take ALL of my money!
The maps btw do get a bit more complicated, but it I also haven't played it since before the Enhanced Edition, and can't speak for any of the DLC.
Also, I seem to recall some kind weapons being in it, but maybe I'm wrong. Like I said, it's been a while.
[off-topic] But if it includes F-Zero, then F-Zero instant wins! [/off-topic]
I'm not playing Wipeout right now only because I skipped ps4 and I upgraded my pc to make it gaming-worthy (and right know I do not feel like buying a console for many, many years).
I will probably buy both. For now I play Redout. I really like the game. ;)
On top of that, buying Redout supports a small aspiring studio whereas buying WipeOut supports a global corporation which shut down the very studio that created the original games...
Also, I don't own a PS4. :P
