1) You must use racing lines similar to formula cars because steering slows you down. Start steering early on from the outer edge, aim for the apex inside and exit outside again.
2) Don't stop strafing if possible. Strafing adds speed when it pushes you in the right direction and reduces your need for steering. Think strafing first, and steering as a support, instead of the other way round.
3) As a generality, don't waste your boost power during or before a corner. Especially in the few first seconds after a turbo or a pad, it is when you must avoid steering the most. Be patient in the corners, wait for your chance to speed up.
4) Wallbouncing is quicker than braking or releasing the gas pedal to avoid obstacles. Make sure to enter the corners at full throttle, then it's all about proper racing line and as few bounces as possible.
Maybe you can pick a narrow ship at first, which will help in the corners. Asera (easier), koen (sturdier), sulha (faster).
I have found that a xbox360 controller is ok.
