inconsistent AI difficulty? (sometimes the AI seems to cheat?)
In the campaign, some levels I'm getting 1st place on my first try without too much trouble, others, I can't get better than last place no matter how many times I try.

I can't figure out why this is. If it was a case of "different map I'm not used to yet," then that would be one thing, but often, nothing about the levels I'm bombing at "feel" harder than others.

I'm not grinding against the wall much more often, or crashing more often, on these levels, yet somehow within the first half-lap, the person in 7th place is already far enough ahead I feel like there's no way I'll ever catch up. Mixing up my powerups doesn't seem to make a significant difference. (I do almost the same when my active power up is 'repair' vs the 'full energy boost' powerups.)

The best guess I have is that maybe the AI is hitting the speed booster things and I'm missing them, but there's no way that they make THAT much of a difference, or I would have noticed on the levels I'm better at.

Any ideas why I might feel like the level itself isn't harder, but the AI is somehow so far ahead (despite no major screwups on my part) that it feels like they're using a class 4 vehicle while I'm still on class 2?

(To clarify, there are definitely levels where I'm struggling a bit from being unfamilliar with the level, but I often still come in 3rd place on these on first or second try.)

AI doesn't cheat - this has been confirmed time and time again by the devs.

What you're running into is probably a few tracks that AI may be better at than others. They do basically play better on some tracks compared to others relative to the players. However, most of this is likely to still be human error.

It's most likely that your main issue is steering too much. You carry a lot of momentum through turns so if you turn rather sharply you slow down a lot (basically for no reason). It's important to get used to the strafing mechanic and productively use it in your steering.

If you want to you can let me know one or more events that you're struggling with, and I could make a recording on them somewhere later today.

From what I have noticed the AI and overall 1/2/3 place times for DLC tracks are way off. I have played through most of all of the career and even with changing the AI to rookie from redout it's still impossible to get a metal.

Far from impossible. I overlap them in most races. Want events speficially do you want help on? You probably have 5-10 seconds to shave off per lap.

If this ever happens to you, just quit the event, restart the game, and try again. Will randomize the A.I and chances are you will blow past them. If the devs are saying the A.I "don't cheat" and are the same each time they are 110% liars. Sometimes a sulha will spawn in first place with aP and a turbo, and unless you are actually good you aren't beating that. I mean you still can, but it will be actually hard and I'd rather just restart and roll for less aids A.I.

How is using the same power ups you have cheating? I can lap the AI on any track after 5 laps. They defiently dont cheat. Being challenging, which they arent, isnt cheating either.
