Richie's Plank Experience

Richie's Plank Experience

Fear of heights fake reaction?
Whats going on with all those peoples saying that this is so awful for peoples with fear of heights?

I was able to test the game at a friend's home... and ive had not even a little bit fear of heights... (in reallife I get at 5 m height already an very uncomfortable feeling!)

It war interesting, but not scary or something else, some peoples says that even Climbey and other games are bad for peoples with fear of heights.

Are those peoples just fake reactions or does everybody feel VR in different ways??
(I wish it would scare me and feel more realistic)

Im such a coward in real, but I know that nothing can happen to me and I am just standing in my room, so are you really scared???

I've demo'd this with many people and have had a few refuse to even get out of the elevator. Priceless.

Did you use a real plank on the floor? What was the size of your real plank? That matters a lot! I always use a real plank and have tested more than 20 friends and most of them have real fear. It depends a lot on the person and you can get used to it, but most people have real fear in my opinion.

Another story are the YouTubers that may act a bit to create a dramatic effect and so on...

I recommend using a real plank with no more than 10cm wide, fine calibrate your virtual and real planks, and for extra immersion: remove your shoes and remove the chaperone grid (and be extremely careful).

For me it is still a bit impressive, he he...

Thanks for your answer.

No i had no real plank, just the normal ground under my feets.
Is that srsly such a big difference??

Maby I should try it out
For me it makes a huge difference because you have to balance yourself over the real plank. On the floor there is no need to balance. The success of this game is based on that, I think... Of course it still depends on the subjective experience and some people still don't get impressed, but most people does...

We are still the only VR experience that lets you clone a real world object into the virtual world. It took months to develop that feature alone. It works well, especially for first timers. I recommend bringing out the plank for your next guest or party.
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

No offense, but Google Earth gives you almost the same experience in VR for free

I disagree. Google Earth VR is totally awesome, but this is a completely different experience. This game is great and unique to introduce VR to friends and family, specially if you use a real plank...

So untrue. I've given a demo to around 30 people last thursday, and some were shaking, sweating and refusing to get out of the elevator. However, I did get a plank, and it was slightly wobbly, which gave people the creeps. I also got a ventilator to blow wind on them, and many mentioned that gave it so much extra effect. If you are not impressed by this, then you should try harder to make the experience real: get a plank (a thick, wobbly one, mine was even suspended above the floor on rubber tiles to prevent it from slipping), a ventilator, a GOOD headset for sound and then we'll talk again.

VR is not there yet to force human brain to completely buy the illusion of presence, some imagination is required from the participants for experience to become truly immersive.

A real plank helps a lot with the illusion... I mean, it really helps and makes it a completely different experience. Totally worth buying a cheap plank to try...
I have 3 real planks, of different wide, to try... young people usually dare with the thin one... :steamhappy:

I've noticed the reaction to the heights is different depending on the person, and it's not always the people you expect. I'm afraid of heights and have no problem in VR. My co-worker could not do the plank experience at all. Another co-worker just took the goggles off and said Nope.

Same with a Friend of mine. He couldn't walk out and was totally shaky on his feet, but i also think the most reactions are fake and exaggerated what i have seen.

I think the most important thing is that you get involved, than you can feel the experience much more with a real plank under your feet (on your first attempt). If youre think there is a ground under your feet and you can walk easily to the side because you have nothing to fear it doesnt catch you.Random Camera shakes when you walk out could be also give an more intensive Experience.

Also this straight Fall down takes away a lot of tension. movements during the Fall where you lose your orientation would be better. Same with the Rocket Thing Game. But for the first attempt in VR it is ok in my Opinion.

i have had this game for awhile and the reactions to it have varied. Ive had people who refused to get out of the elevator, others who walked the plank tentatively and others who have leapt right off with 0 fear. I even had one person rip the headset off an run.

i have a great video of a coworker who went face first into the conference room desk after getting pushed (i didnt do the pushing)
