Is BeerMP safe? Don't use beermp/wreckmp

Before I start, I'm not accusing the BeerMP team of anything, I just want to make sure it's safe before I download it.
When I put the link for the BeerMP website into virus total it marks it as being malicious, I also saw someone on reddit saying that windows defender marked it as a virus. Is BeerMP legit? Something about this project being started and mostly finished in just a few months as compared to MSCO taking way longer, and the fact that BeerMP is free just seems to good to be true. Maybe I am insane. I don't do any coding or game modding so I don't know, maybe they're just really good, again I wouldn't know. Also I would appreciate it greatly if anyone who already has the mod downloaded could run it through virus total, just cause I don't want to download it until I know for a fact it's legit.

Yeah my antivirus also gets set off by it. It does work and isn't a virus (maybe), albeit it's pretty janky, I've noticed a lot of syncing issues when I play with a couple friends.

But yes, it's legit and probably won't send all of your E-oil to Russia.

I don't use windows but my little brother uses it and windows defender said it was a virus, I told him to put it in virus total and virus total said it was a virus, we tested the launcher. Also it's called Wreck MP instead of BeerMP

I'm not intimately familiar with the coding of the mod, nor am I a programmer, but I do hold a cybersecurity certification and I'm generally familiar with how AVs and other "virus analyzer" type things can deliver false positives. Certain types of mods can sometimes be flagged as malware because they contain code that is similar to that of malware, even if it's not being used maliciously. Websites like virustotal generally do static analysis, which means they don't really look at how a file or program works in practice and only look at whether its code is similar to known malware.

In this case it could be because the mod is sending data from the local machine out to the internet, which is something that a Trojan would do. But that function is necessary for the mod to work.

Have had it since last December (me and my brother downloaded it) for both of us it didn't cause any trouble, and haven't had any problems even when i downloaded windows defender didn't flag it. Maybe it's some other thing that causes it or you downloaded it from an untrustable source
