The game currently has no built in tutorial, although an engine building manual is being worked on. Also it's rather unforgiving, so keep that in mind, and I suggest to have Permadeath turned off. It might take you a few restarts of the savegame to understand how not to die.
Building the car is really actually kind of like a jigsaw puzzle. When you point at a part, it will tell you the name of the part and from that, if you are smart, you can at least have a good guess as to where it goes. I had absolutely no idea where and in what order to put the parts when I started but now I have learned and can do it in my sleep.
The most daunting thing I would say is the sheer amount of parts and looking at them all and thinking "Where do I begin...."
I also have a friend on TS who knows a fair bit about cars so, was useful to ask him from time to time :P
Getting car running without extra noices then I had to ask some help, like how rackers should be tuned.
So if you like puzzle games, have some visual-spatial intelligence and little bit patience then you are ok to go. IMHO
But there are guides for those who are in need.
