Yes, that's exactly how alcoholic beverages are made. The yeast uses the sugar as energy, producing carbon dioxide and ethanol as a byproduct. Hops, and other ingredients, are used for flavouring, whereas kilju, if made correctly, doesn't taste like anything except alcohol. Usually there's more or less impurities from the yeast etc. making it taste like crap.
Then again, you don't drink it for flavour :D
Which won't do much, it still gets labeled kilju even if there's no alcohol. So you'll have to either let Jokke try it or try it yourself.
