I guess with banging u don't mean backfiring sound. Backfiring can be caused by too lean fuel mix( try pulling choke out to stop it). Then of course if car is leaking oil and/or coolant that will raise engine temperature too high after a while causing backfire (normal temp is at 12 o'clock, if needle goes over that engine is overheating).
Clicking/ticking sounds could be also caused valves being off tune (not this if u haven't touched them)
Another source could be distributor but it makes more like metallic whistle when it's wrong.
Surely engine turns off when u turn ignition off?
Wires cant be put in wrong.
