Just now I successfully pumped a cesspool and returned home with red "dirtiness". Jumped in the sauna and fumbled with how to operate that while downing 3 beers for thirst and throwing a leak in the sauna coals. While waiting for the suana to warm up it started to rain in real life and I had to run around the house closing windows, meanwhile my dude DIED in the sauna from "dehydration" while sitting next to a case of beer. Now I have to do the whole day over again. Argh, that is not encouraging! :/
this game prescribes to the old fashioned save point method, there is other places where you can save (there's an outhouse at every major location; behind the shop, behind the scrap truck at the garage, the landfill site, and one on the island) and that's where you can load to, this isn't supposed to be a casual game, nor is it supposed to be easy.
take your time, learn the game's rhythm and learn it's logic, take your time, don't take shortcuts and drive carefully, and for a rule of 3, take your time. you can drink from the taps, you can piss into your mouth if need be, you can sleep in the septic truck, the sofa at the landfill and on the car's back seats, it's intuitive but only in a specific way, once you get it, you've got it.
This is just how the game is ment to be, its harsh, but rewarding and hella fun.
Best advice: take it easy, be extra save, if you think "Oh, I can cut across here, its a risk, but it will save so much time" Don't, just don't, because that what gets you killed in the game.
But still will basically need to also use KB + Mouse for Walking & Looking and such.
Everything you need from Store when starting out, you can fit inside Sewage Truck (aka GIFU) cabin just fine. And is a much easier vehicle to drive overall in my honest opinion. Just remeber to put the Rear Axle down, as this is much more stable when you're at higher speeds.
The Van however is just terrible, pretty much only time I needed to use it was for transporting the Sofa from the land-fill. I avoid Delivery Van and Ferndale at all costs...
And the way the game is now, the Satsuma really isn't even good option until you get all the parts that have Wear % either repaired or replaced at Mechanic firstly or shortly after getting it up and running on the road. This means you probably don't even want to assumble Satsuma until you have some decent starting money first, so that means grabbing food & drink, and starting on some work/jobs. Players starting out, the easy money is that you can do the Wood Delivery job once per day (during daylight hours only), regardless of that guy calling you on home phone or not. However for available sewage jobs, you need to have those folks call you. A red dart is placed on the map (on your wall in front of the home phone) when the job call is confirmed by you picking up the phone as they call.
Yes, only way to Save Game, is at an available Toilet.
> Backyard of Drunk Guy (guy who calls you from Pub for ride home; one you can sell Kilju to)
> Rear side of Teimo Shop/Bar
> Right side of Fleetari Mechanic Shop
> Log-Cabin (getaway island); accessable only by Boat.
> two at your Home; main house bathroom; another at vehicle storage area (where the Tractor and Wood Pile are located, just south of your home)
> Land-Fill area (just north of air-strip;drag-strip); Land-Fill is also used as place for items to respawn if they fall through the map, as a safe-guard against them being lost forever.

Actually at least on test branch sauna does not clean you anymore. Dirtiness can be get rid of with shower or swimming in the lake. I dont know if that update has become to the actual version already.
But yes everything in your game world will be as it was before you died.
Certain things though are always reset when you die, such as:
> removal or loose empty containers (pretty much except for Juice, since those are re-usable for Kilju; or those blue beer case/containers)
> removal of loose chopped wood halves; however any wood you built up within the Tractor's Trailer would still be present.
> Reset of all NPCs
Without PD=ON; think of dying as basically...
You were treated by Paramedics and then dropped off at home.
Yes definitely not a good idea to die when a vehicle was running, or while driving, or having vehicle(s) far away from home.
You could use the Moped to get back to where you were, then put the Moped inside the other vehicle in order to get that back home again once you're finished.
You can also reset any body damages to Satsuma via; once game exits back to Main Menu; ALT+TAB and within the saved game folder, delete the MESH file. Then ALT+TAB back to back and click Continue to load your save. MESH only holds some temp data, like vehicle body damages; nothing important.
And the one time I needed to try to hitchhike from Green Car Guy I found him crashed in the trees.
Tap the steering, and try to never brake while turning. Slow down before turns to avoid sliding, coming off the bike, etc. And it likes to sway back and forth at bit on dirt roads or higher speeds, so just be aware of this so as not to over compensate for when it occurs, sliding the bike and possible dying too; due to your speed and such.
