flashing red light on dashboard
I think the light is for the alternator.
it flashes when I brake of shift so it doesn't make any sense to me

If it only come on, when you brake, its just because the idle gets to low, for the alternator to produce enough electricity.
If it comes on, when the engine just idles, bump up the idle a bit.

if your fanbelt is fully tuned and thight, your alternator could be broken
