Rocker shaft tuning?
Does anyone know a new technique for the rocker shaft tuning?

(Since it was updated)

In case you want a summary. The old way works 20 down 7 up on the mouse wheel. (Down meaning toward you).

Now if you want to get a tiny bit more power than that you can take them to fleetari, who now tunes valves perfectly with the "engine tuning" option. In mscedit, this means the exhaust valves are at 7 and the intakes are at 8.

I've never used the 20 down 7 up technique. I do it the same as I've always done. Scroll down untill it starts ticking, then scroll 1 up to make it stop. Done. Been doing this for almost 300 hours ingame.
That works alright rick, unless you loaded a save from before the valve tuning update. Then you'd have a hard time getting the ticking to stop because 4 of your valves would be too loose or tight or whatever adjective describes too far down.

The 20-7 method also lets you tune the valves without having to run the engine with no rocker cover, which loses oil. I noticed I usually lost about 10% of my oil whenever i tuned the valves by ear.

Tru dat. 20 down 7 up is also always a last ditch option when you screwed something up and dont know where.

If you look at the rocker shaft, then the screws are adressed like this to exhaust and intake;
Exhaust, intake, intake, exhaust, exhaust, intake intake, exhaust.

If you adjust the valves manually ingame, without cheats, then adjust the exhaust valves 20up and 10 down. For the intake valves, adjust them to 20up, 8 down.

Like I said, this has always worked for me, after every update in the past year and a half.

Let me make my statement more precise. I was trying to avoid being this detailed but here we go.

If your valves were tuned well before the update (aug 18th main branch), all four exhaust valves would be causing ticking after it. Unless you had that information, it would be very hard to fix the ticking because one valve ticking sounds the same as any number greater than one. So if more than one valve is ticking, you won't know whether the adjustment you're making to a single valve is good or bad until the engine dies. You could even take a valve that was fine and move it to where it's ticking without knowing.

Therefore, if your valves are really messed up, either by you or by an update, it's preferable to use "20-7." That's why people tend to give that method as an answer when someone is asking for help with valves.

edit to add a bit more info: Of course, tuning by ear can be preferable if there's no ticking. In fact I think it gives a tiny bit extra power on average. If you want an optimal tune though, Fleetari or save editing are your only options.

Oh, so 20 down and 7 up still works, its just that there are different specs for how you tune it, alright... Thanks.

When we're at it; what is the most power giving setting for intake valves, I tried tightening them by 1, 2 and 3 clicks and Satsuma still loses RPM on 4th gear and has very low acceleration. Using dual carb, longest gear ratio and exhaust valves are as loose as possible.

tyfti
The most powerful intake valve setting is 8 in the editor, which fleetari will adjust them to if you have him tune the engine. If you don't want to edit or pay fleetari your hard earned money, the closest you can get to that value is by adjusting valves down until they tick, then going up one (again, "down" meaning toward you on the mouse wheel as you're holding the mouse). Tuning by hand costs you 2 or 3 horsepower at most compared to the optimal values.

Same goes for the exhausts except in the recent update that's now 7 in the editor instead of 8. That's why the update broke your tuning if you were well tuned before it.

edit: should add that the change from 8 to 7 on the exhausts caused a power drop in the recent update, especially at high rpm. I'm a fan of this change because the engine was probably too good at high rpm before. Now it actually behooves you to shift before the rev limiter.

im currently using exhaust valves 20up and 10 down. For the intake valves, adjust them to 20up, 8 down. is this a good setting? im not sure on top end power 120km stock
