Why does the handbrake button in Car Controls not Work?
This is something that’s always bugged me about the game and that’s the options in the settings for Car Controls not actually working. In the past I’ve used a Logitech Driving Force GT Wheel and am currently playing with an Xbox Controller and it annoys me like hell there are options in the settings you assign to buttons which then do not work at all when you go back in game. Handbrake being one, why assign that to a button, in my current settings the B Button on the Controller when in fact no matter how many times you press it the handbrake in the car, van or truck won’t turn off or on. Meaning you still have to reach for your mouse and prat about clicking on the bloody thing on the screen.

Also there is an option in the input settings on the box that pops up when you launch the game to set a button to control Engine Start/Stop but again when you get in game and enter your vehicle of choice and press the button nothing happens, again meaning you have to switch back to the mouse and faff around finding the ignition switch and having to click with the mouse.

How come the developer hasn’t made more effort to make the controls between Wheel/Controller and Keyboard/Mouse a bit more user friendly and seamless to transition between? Why is there still no way to control your character view with a controller when driving? Why is there no one click button assignment to centre your view when driving?

I enjoy the game a lot don’t get me wrong but I do find that after all this time since it was released you still have to juggle controls so awkwardly.

This particular handbrake which can be assigned to keyboard works differently. It will not initiate animation ingame, but it works, except for the van. Actually this is the best way to stop the craptanker in place when full and speeding.

As said above, it's separate from the animation. The keybind does not toggle the handbrake on and off, just holds it on while pressed, to allow handbrake turns.

Well the developer needs to add proper controls then so you can toggle the handbrakes/ignition on and off with a Wheel/Controller. It's 2018 for pete's sake. The most basic of driving games has this functionality. I should not need to keep switching between three different input devices to be able to play this game.

Handbrake assignment is just for quick pulls of the handbrake(and works just fine as intended). It's not for controlling the actual parking brake. The only reason that controls screen on game start appears is because TG can't get rid of it. He explained it in 2016 that nothing in that panel does anything except the resolution.

The only way I see the switching between mouse/controller being "user-friendly" is via VR controls. The mouse is emulating your in-game hand. As for controlling the camera with a controller, I find that rather annoying. It's never right for FPS games. What I would like is VR/IR camera control, but he said that's not a priority.

Adding the ignition to a keypress is just 2 lines of code(1 if you don't care about semantics) so that's not the issue here. I would assume that the current way it's set up is intentional. Forcing the player to actually control the car and not emulate the control of the car. So from my perspective, most driving games LACK in this regard by making every single function assignable to a button isntead of requireing the user to interact with the vehicle. I would like it as an option(since I'm building my own cockpit), but it's definitely not needed at this stage.

99% of driving is driving, not messing with the interior of the car.

This.

To add, I find it more satisfying messing with the controls manually while driving than to simply press a button to have it automatically do it. Like in Forza and Dirt for example, so many animations that SHOULD be the player are done automatically and to me, it's trippy and un-natural to see a body doing something you don't want it to do. Like moving the hand to the shifter at high RPM. If I have no intention to shift, then my character shouldn't be getting ready to.

Agreed, I love FH3 but for crying out loud I know how to turn on my wipers and headlights :steammocking:

Thing is though in MSC you don’t see your character grab the handbrake and manually release it it’ll apply it, you just see the mouse pointer turn into a hand and the object moves. Same goes for the ignition so using the argument that it’s more satisfying then Forza or other games doesn’t really carry weight as your not actually seeing animations of the actions and being immersed.

I have no problem running round the world on foot, doing all the repair stuff and what have you using the mouse and keyboard. The minute I take control of a vehicle and we get to the driving part of the game I switch to a Controller or Wheel because they are the best devices to control that aspect and it’s really annoying that when you hit F1 on the keyboard to bring up the menu you go to Car Controls and you can’t assign buttons to perform key functions you want as the driver and operator of a vehicle. You go to player controls and you can assign a button for everything you need from crouching, jumping, swearing, hitchhiking etc

All I want is an option in Car Controls to assign say the right stick to control the camera movement, maybe clicking the right button to centre the camera view. If I assign the Circle Button to control the Handbrake then when I press that on my controller or wheel the vehicles handbrake is applied or released. It means the minute I switch from mucking about on foot as the player to being behind the wheel I can kick back in my chair, relax with either my controller or wheel and enjoy the driving. I just get so annoyed when I currently have to keep leaning forward to press buttons on the keyboard or use the mouse when I should be driving because the options can’t be put on my preferred control device for driving. It’s worse when I’m using my wheel because with my desk I can’t have my keyboard on it when I have the wheel setup so it becomes a real pain then as I have to turn sideways to use the keyboard which I lay on the bed next to me which is really immersion breaking then.

Fair enough, however unlike most games you still have to manually search for what you're looking for instead of just pressing a button.

I could argue when I’m driving my real car in real life when I want to apply the handbrake I don’t have to physically look for it and check it’s there to apply it. I just think handbrake and my left hand pulls the handbrake.
As for ignition I don’t have to look for a key and turn it. My car has a push button to start and stop the engine. So my car is actually more like video games in that sense.
In an ideal world we’d have hardware manufacturers who make steering wheels produce them with handbrakes and ignition switches to properly simulate the car controls.
I just don’t get why the options aren’t there. If some people don’t want to use them then they just wouldn’t enable or assign them. At least give people the option. It’s a bit like the Auto-Shift Auto-Clutch and Forcefeedback options, some people use them, some people don’t but they are there for that reason as it gives people the option. That’s all I’m looking for is options within my games options to set the game up how I want to play and enjoy it.
