Try changing the format manually from .bak to .txt maybe?
Personally, I haven't had to use a MSCeditor backup since this change was made, so unfortunately I'm unable to help in using them. Pardon the useless post.
Open the file with notepad or word etc, when it loads just click save as and where you select file format it should be already changed to .txt format if not click the drop down box and change to .txt then click save and its done
Absolutely do not do this as it might completely mess with the character encoding. Just rename the file extension. Here's how:

It works fine, it doesnt mess anything up. your way is quicker and simpler though
Highlight the file, click F2. If thats to difficult, Right click the file chose....Rename.
WordPad destroys the entire thing basically.

Notepad not as bad, but it still re encodes a lot of whitespaces amongst other characters.

Really, don't do this.
This is just an educated guess, but I think an editor dedicated to programming like Notepad++ would not have those problems as it doesn't treat the file like a textfile (which WordPad and Notepad do) but rather a piece of code which it is.
That is the most basic computer knowledge anyone would have.
