Report a translation problem
The film might have played a part, but it might just as well be the other way around - he chose the car and remembered or found out it had been in that movie, too. The movie or the game don't take place where he was born.
Perhaps it just seemed so plausible that someone mentioned it somewhere as a fact. I for example was always convinced the dev was born in the area the game depicts, until I bothered to check where his home town/village actually was on the map.
