Modding the game itself is changing textures, some values etc
Creating mods is adding new functions, objects, models etc.

They both require knowledge but first one is easier.
I would suggest to you reading or watching some tutorials on how to mod the games.

Furthermore - if you want to create visual mods then changing custom skin of satsuma will be a good start. It will give you some degree of knowledge on what's it like and how it works

i would like to make items and stuff but i know that would be hard

So first of all get around programs for 3d graphic and try creating basic models.
Then decide, if you want to animate it or only use in created form.
Then try to import this model in e.g. uniity and teach yourself how to add some actions for it.
Then, finally, you maybe will be able to lay your hands on MSC code and you might be able, after many failiures and problems, to add such item.

It is scary and long process but hey, once you achieve it doors to the world of programming might open a bit.
Good luck

well, it's not easy, RedVarg's advice is good, if it's something relatively simple like a texture change you can use Unity Assets Explorer, which is quite a popular thing for this game, i think that's the best place to start and get your bearings, actually making items and implementing them as mods or plugins is a lengthy and very complicated process.
