For drag racing, you might try the longer ratios instead (maybe even longest). You'll be slower off the mark, but you'll also stay in each gear longer, allowing you to accelerate longer and to a higher speed. Not sure which one will win in this game though.
Basically you want to be just about to redline 4th when you run over the line. Too long and you'll still be winding up when you finish - too short and you'll be bouncing off the limiter before you get halfway down the run.
As for rallying - I generally run a little taller then stock (3.9? - is there a 4.2?) - 2nd gear for corners, 3th gear 90% of the time, 4th on any straight.
