My Summer Car

My Summer Car

Update the AI and physics to a more acceptable standard, please?
The game itself is wonderful, I've been playing it since I bought it in it's early stages and There's not much complaint with it in terms of lore or immersion, outside of the broken characteristics that seem to plague My Summer Car. As I've been trying my hardest to play the game legitimately, I just can't. Things get lost, fall through the ground and don't re-spawn and Landfill, Fleetari takes wheels and they disappear from existence, AI vehicles are constantly breaking like the bus and vehicles driving around. If you hit cousin Pena because he's drunk driving, doing 80 on the back roads, you're he one that goes to jail for it. I mean, even taking a part off the Satsuma, like the seat could damage the entire car and render your progress useless.

I could probably go on and on about some of the bugs and flaws I've had that have made me have to completely trash hours of game play, and not by any fault of my own. I understand it's not perfect, but the amount of issues that coincide with casual game play makes it so that you must have some sort of editor or mod handy, just for the game to carry out it's basic needs, like spawning things that get lost through the ground, or when Fleetari takes parts, and they disappear into the Abyss. Just trying to drive is a gamble because the AI's have no sense of yielding, or pulling over. it makes no sense.

I'm not sure if My Summer Car was intended to be this broken this far in development, but I feel there's things that still need to be buffed before all development is finished with this game, rather than just adding things. I believe a lot of things need to be perfected first like the lack of AI walking/driving paths, speeds, interaction, caution. Even though the game takes place in 1995, the AI doesn't need to act like it was made back then too. There's also a lack of graphical settings, and optimization (Mostly that has to do with the Satsuma) that makes this game run at 25-30 FPS max on moderate to high standard hardware without frame V-Sync.

I love My Summer Car to death, and I would love to see it with all the kinks ironed out, but there's a lot of things, people are just not mentioning or pass off as just part of the game that I don't understand why. It's broken. You shouldn't need a third party mod just to play MSC without the risk of losing something, or AI's not even noticing the player is there when you're doing highway speeds. Please fix this masterpiece. I know the game is still in early access. Hopefully, some of these things will be fixed/revised by time the game is considered complete.

For context: This is in no way meant to be slander toward the creator, or game. These are all thoughts and experiences noticed and compiled from my time of playing My Summer Car that seemingly haven't gotten any better from launch.

Toplessgun built the game on Unity 5. Unity 5 was released in 2015. He is pushing the engine well beyond what it was intended to be able to handle, and some physics interactions are funky as a result. Not really fixable without starting over from scratch.

Unity's physics is generally a bit jank, 5.0 being as old as it is doesn't help the case, a port to anything newer like 5.6 wouldn't be too horrific a task assuming TG wants to deal with converting hinges and other weird stuff to work there, but that doesn't substantially improve the physics engine itself afaik?

With how the game is made 90% using Playmaker FSMs, i wouldn't expect the framerate to get any better, the sheer quantity of them on the Satsuma is what pushes fps low for systems with weaker potentially clockspeed kneecapped processors

If just the simulation scripts on the Satsuma were rewritten in native C# script that may significantly improve game performance without having to touch much else honestly, better question is whether or not its worth remaking the Satsuma so late on in development

(I suspect the roadcar AI are also severely limited by what's able to be done in those Playmaker FSMs?)

nothing against anyone here, Playmaker is just a bit messy with how it handles things behind the scenes and that overhead adds up quickly with just how much of it is used in MSC

I would not put so much blame on Unity (5.0) or Playmaker itself. It is more about how the user / designer uses the tools. It is more than likely that all the issues described and still present are just due to my lack of incompetence :D That is just unfortunate byproduct of indie games, the skills and standards change from developer to developer.

But I am willing to accept that as I am not coder or professional game developer, the quality of end product cannot be compared to those that are made with higher standards. I am fully aware of my limitations and try to do the best of what I have. Due to these reasons I wanted to keep the price of the game relatively low as well.

I am personally VERY happy with the game as it is, so no major changes in the future. Of course I still try to fix everything I can.

I'm just a user, not a game developer, but I think this game is already fully optimized.
And as I've always said, if the game were bug free, it would be very boring... :sleepy_yeti:
Because MSC is a game where you can enjoy unexpected accidents and happenings.
(It's personal impression)

The crappy AI adds character to the game, I wouldn't change it :D

just ♥♥♥♥ off we love this physics
I'll be honest, the....umm....*ehem*....unique physics in this game is what actually what drew me to it. The unexpected nature on how things interact is what keeps it interesting, and the best part? No matter how you try to replicate an "issue", its almost impossible to repeat it, making each play session/playthrough a unique and different experience.

I mean, come on, how many other games are there where simply trying to get into a car can potentially launch you into space, then back to the ground unharmed?
