Folk Emerging - Customization + Endless Mode Update

This is a larger update that addresses lots of player feedback, adds more customization, and lengthens time with late-game content. It includes the following changes:

Design

Added the much-requested "keep playing" option after victory/defeat! (only in full game, not demo)
- WARNING: anything beyond that point is outside the designed experience, will not unlock Steam Achievements, and performance will degrade as global population keeps increasing indefinitely!
Added game setting for Victory Threshold, starting with two options: 300 or 400. This should allow for more time spent with late-game content and proto-civilizations. (only in full game, not demo)
More granular difficulty settings:
- Calm (used to be "Easier")
- Favorable (new default)
- Precarious (used to be "Standard")
- Harsh
- Relentless (used to be "Harder")
- (NOTE: if you first load into an older saved game to finish that session, please then exit & restart the game before starting a new playthrough with the new difficulty settings)
"See map" button on game outcome screen reworked to be "Reveal map" and fully reveals the entire map (but if so, cannot keep playing)
Increase splitting threshold preferences for non-player bands, they now split less frequently
Temples now also give +5 VP
Buffed Attack Strength of various units: clubs 2->3; shields 2->3; spears 3->4; daggers 2->3; bows 4->5; raiders 4->6; sumerian war carts 4->6; kurgan chariots 4->6; celtic champions 4->6; indic militia 3->4; chinese ge 4->6
Flint now gives +1 Attack Strength instead of +10% Attack Strength
All three spiritual site worship point levels now give +1 Culture/turn, meaning +1/+1/+1 (cumulative) instead of +1/+2/+3 (cumulative) for each level
All cultural norms now give +1 Worship Point
Clan mediation effect duration increased from 10 turns to 15
Positive happiness levels no longer boost Fertility
Shaman's boost to Fertility decreased from +10% Fertility per 1 Discipline , to +5% per 1 Discipline
Fertility boost from Festivals decreased from +0.2 to +0.1
Mount Ararat's devotee bonus to fertility decreased from +0.2 to +0.1

Green/red in attribute breakdowns now represents "good"/"bad", not just numerically positive/negative

Bugs Fixed

Fixed Steam achievement for winning on Harder difficulty
Fixed Steam achievements for becoming proto-civ worshipping a specific Deity
Fixed issue where gaining VP between turns from births enough to cross victory threshold would trigger victory acknowledgement, but if player then dropped below the threshold due to deaths and another player won on the same turn, there would also be a defeat acknowledgement. Now such victory/defeat acknowledgements only trigger at the start of the player's turn.
Fixed band splitting UX/UI bugs
Fixed saves not loading proving grounds units correctly
Fixed production target resource cost being multiplied by bonuses (e.g. Delver), these costs are now deducted as a second-order modifier
Fixed transferring specialist from one band to another not taking on new band's tile-based bonuses (e.g. Reliable Freshwater)

Reputation seems worthless

Since reputation only affects how influence from within your tribe, who cares about getting more reputation? It seems totally pointless since an increase in one clan's reputation will just lower their opinion of each other due to differences in relative influence. I don't get it. There are all these things that give reputation, but they seem to be totally worthless. Even if reputation increases weren't a double-edged sword, their overall influence is so miniscule that it's pretty much always to choose som...

Folk Emerging - Patch, August 27th 2026

This patch includes the following changes:

Design
- Settlers clan effect changed from +0.2 Fertility if Not Migrated This Turn to +25% Production if Not Migrated This Turn
- Reliable Freshwater now gives -20% Risk of Disease, down from -25%
- Maker specialist's Courage now gives -5% Risk of Disease per 1 Courage, down from -10%
- Cattle risk of disease increased from +0.01 to +0.02
- Urban Dwellings now also give +2 Morale (when defending base)
- Proto-Indic Drainage Works: Irrigation now gives -20% risk of disease instead of -30%
- Caution norm now gives -20% Risk of Disease instead of -30%
- Non-player bands are more likely to upgrade their existing units rather than recruit new ones
- Boosted probabilistic outcome of fishing event to give 30 food instead of 20
UI
- Turns Since Migration now shown in the selected band's Moves tooltip
Fixed bugs:
- Fixed band conquest event sometimes soft-locking player
- Fixed Earth tribe effect text leftover from demo
- Fixed Hazelnut foraging bonus text mismatch
- Fixed Pine foraging bonus, now correctly gives +0.1 Fertility instead of +0.5
- Fixed bug in likelihood calculation of non-player bands backing off from intended attacks based on band size difference

Proving Grounds

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is tired of rolling and re-rolling the Proving Grounds die in order to train up a certain unit. Why the randomness? If the Band wants a particular type of troop why can't they train it? If randomness must remain, perhaps to reflect the disorder of early ages, why can't we retire troop types that appear in Training Grounds we don't ever want to see again? In Training Grounds we can 'Hold' a troop type. So it is presumed the Band has some control over where it invests t...

This is a great game with discrete, meaningful choices keeping you engaged and enjoying your tribe's development all the way to the endgame.

There are interesting strategic decisions such as how much you try to settle down vs. move around, how sustainable you'll be with your foraging to preserve the food webs in the ecosystem, the technology path you will research first, which cultural norms you will adopt, and so on. Your choice of tribe and band will impact these strategic decisions, and you can work towards synergies and other benefits (like special items and ores) that further amplify your approach.

Yet there are also interesting tactical decisions such as whether to forage, or collect resources, or build goodies for your band; or how you're going to set up your army composition. Rewards and incentives abound, so you're constantly making meaningful choices that make your tribe better and stronger in different ways. Combat itself is automatic, meaning it's not tedious in the least. Instead, it's automatically resolved step-by-step so that you can see how the result emerges. Your efforts are to train up your troops, arm them, and position them beneficially - plenty of decision space yet not too onerous (i.e. no micromanagement). For example, "shields" troops in front of "clubs" troops makes for a powerful combo, but there are lots of interesting permutations possible, and available troop types (to deploy) are given by technology and rolled probabilistically (at the cost of training) - i.e. try out the daggers and slingers combo if that's what you rolled.

Each game lasts 3-5 hours, and the variety of choices available will have you keep coming back to try out a new tribe, a new clan, a new strategy. It successfully captures the "one more turn" feeling, as well as the "one more game" feeling! Overall game length is not that long, so you can see the results of your efforts pretty quickly, not to mention that the game is concluding just when you'd maybe want to move on to the next one and try out a new strategy. Yet it's not too short either, as you feel like you're actually building up your tribe and benefitting from choices you made earlier in the game.

On top of being a very enjoyable 4X, it's got an endearing, immersive and consistent theme. As well, the developer is very engaged and responsive to feedback. This game is definitely worth playing and is lots of fun.

The theme is great, but the execution is clumsy. Gathering food becomes kind of trivial pretty fast, the AI is garbage, the world is small, and the actual gameplay elements you have are very limited. There's a skeleton of something interesting here, but it's far from realized. Check back in 2 years.

I wouldn't recommend buying this... currently. It needs a better tutorial and a clearer UI.

Maritime Gameplay

Is there an expansion of Maritime mechanics planned? I really like studying coastal cultures and how they developed in relation to the sea and I was very sad I couldn't live off fishing and foraging the beaches.

Please Explain Combat XP

Does training accomplish anything besides vaulting new unit types into the mix? Does training add combat XP? Like most newbies I just got blown away by an AI competitor. His throwers were level 2. 8 damage vs my best 3 damage for level 1 units. How do combat units, who are people in the tribe, get combat XP? Attacking wildlife? Set piece battles with other tribes? Thanks in advance....

Splitting Tribes a Big Surprise

It came as a shock to me after splitting my tribe the first time that I was only allowed to move one of the two split-off units each turn. The other has to sit in place. Next surprise was one retained the military training and recruited units up to the point of the split. The split-off unit has to rediscover all the military units and train them up from scratch. Apparently the technology tree and cultural norms remain applicable to each of the new units. But somehow the original unit remembers the mil...
