What is the appeal of this game?
I've never played the first games, but i've seen them in videos and heard of them, but when i see those and even this I'm curious what's appealing about it, like what's the gameplay loop about, where does the challenge come from (if any), what's the fun factor?

Yeah I must be missing something. I like a good retro classic but not seeing what the allure is other than the goofy voice. Trailer videos could do more to show gameplay.

It's a great co-op game. That's where it really shines.

But what about it makes it a good co op game?

The original was a dungeon crawler with everything (I mean everything) randomized. Random is very fun and less likely to bore you out. This game is ment to be played with a friend, so if you don't have friends, don't bother. If you do though, try it. It's been almost 30 years but nothing like this came out.

It's fun for the exploration, the challenge, and the wackiness of the world and characters. Plus the random generation means no two games will be the same.

And people have just as much fun playing solo as co-op. Don't take only two people's word that it's only fun in co-op.

I still have my Megadrive version and many others (Sega Genisis for the US) The appeal -long before it was saturated and overused in all games, was two wacky characters that were very funny and the music and levels builds just cracked you up. You could also just Jam-out with the controller buttons and D-pad along with crazy backgrounds. Many of the 'enemy' on the levels were parodies of life -school kids, opera singers, fat people! That could run you over, knock you off the map you were on to a lower level and so forth. You obviously had to be around at the time to appreciate the humour and gameplay Exactly like BallZ on the same console https://youtu.be/9xgBaMQtG8k I'm doing some further checking on this to find out if i'm interested like Grim Fandango Remastered and Day of the Tentacle remastered - both brilliant!

What made the original stand out was 3 factors: Being the only rougelike dungeon crawler on Sega consoles at the time; The fact the game was built from the ground up to be played in 2 player co-op; And the laid back, slow pace of the game, where the focus was more on exploration and navigation *around* hazards instead of through them.

For this latest installment they brought back the original gameplay from the first Sega game, but with added features from the games that came after for more variety in gameplay, but it's really all about havin' a chill time. You get money, you get presents, you avoid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. EZPZ lemon squeezy, and fun to goof around in when you don't want a super serious, super hard game.

here, this is a really good review for the Switch version, it'll give you a better idea what this is all about.

couch coop is really fun.

While the game is definitely better with co-op, it's certainly perfectly fine as a single-player experience. The vast majority of my time with TJ&E was spent playing it single-player.

I don't think most younger players are gonna get into this game. By "younger" I mean "too young to have played the original Genesis/MD game when it was new."

Without the nostalgia factor it's a roguelike with simplistic mechanics and somewhat awkward controls. If you're not a fan of the original games, then, unless you're really into the visual style or the music (both of which are good), I don't think it's for you.

stop using roguelike as a defining factor here.

you wander around looking for ship parts, and opening presents. that's it.
sound like fun?
if not, then skip.
the mini games are horrible, and i can't get over how cheap the look and animations are.
and to nay-sayers, yeah i'm old enough to have played the originals, which outshine this in every way imagineable, aside of not having online play.

this has online play.

so .... yeah.

Its nostalgia bait, there practically is no appeal unless you loved the older games.

I'm going to have to completely disagree with this opinion that you've been posting everywhere. This is definitely the version of the game I'd rather play
