Why no Gear Ratios?
every good racing game lets you select your gear ratios, I just recently came back to F1, I have tried many setups, yes the cars drive well, but EVERY SETUP feels the same, other than a bit of speed with less downforce, the gears always made the difference, I now feel trying to get a good setup is a waste of time, as there is little or no difference in driving ability of different setups. CREATING SETUPS WAS ALWAYS A BIG PART OF RACING GAMES, MY CAT COULD CREATE A SETUP THAT IS NO DIFFERENT TO ANY THAT i HAVE TRIED.

Look at real life F1 rules. Now ask your self this same question.

Cars must have eight forward gear ratios as well as a reverse gear.

Each team must nominate the eight forward gear ratios at or before the first race of the season. They are then fixed for the year.

and???

So I would like to select my own gear ratios, at the beginning of the season. As in the FI RULES.

& it is a GAME.

the rules are based on the real rules AND the real teams. If you where a manufacture in this GAME I can see why you could have a concern. You are playing as the driver. If playing as a red bull driver for examle, you couldnt change Gear ratios mid Season. Nor would you do so at the begining of the season. Its the Teams design, not the drivers. It simply doesnt play a role on the weekly basis in real life. Your asking for a Mod, not an Acurate Feature.

There are many aspects in this game where we take on the role of something more than just the driver. Senior designer (which upgrades we follow), chief strategist (choosing our own race strategy, our tyre choices), we can even put on any setup we like and ignore all advice. I don't see that what the OP is asking is any more unrealistic than any of those examples.

That said, I am not sure it is a good idea. Having to lock in the AI level for a whole season hasn't been working over the years imho, and setting ratios for a whole year is only another thing to get wrong and annoy. But if it had reccommended settings for those who are unsure, I see no downside.

Have fun :)

Dude, you can change the AI level before each practice session since F1 2016.

I know :) By "over the years" I meant since the first games. 5-6 years to realise something isn't working is perhaps not a company to trust with locking in the gear ratios for the entire season without advice was my point.

Have fun :)

Why are you still babbling about the gear ratios? They are set before the season starts. You want the ability to set them before you start your season?

Just the fact you believe that setups don't matter instantly makes you a noob at these F1 games. Setups make a massive difference. I can change my Throttle On Diff by 5 and it feels different and if reflects parts of the track, that's why I change it 3-4 times a lap depending on the turns. Ofcourse realizing these subtle changes doesn't matter much if you're playing with assists on....you have to turn everything off, only then you'll realize how setups work.

Because then adjusting gear ratios would be part of making the perfect setup for a track, which is not a thing IRL.

Besides, youre already in a team in the game depending on what car you pick, so thats what ratios you'll be using

I believe we cannot change the gears like in 2013 because these cars have much different engines and if you know how to drive one then you would also see and understand why it would be impractical to be able to change gear ratios.

For gearbox info scroll down to technical regulations pdf. Starting on page 37.
