Recommended upgrade feature

Does anyone know how the recommended upgrade feature works? Just starting out a career, it seems that it recommends from the powertrain, aero, and chassis departments based on whichever section of the car is most lacking.

Does this behaviour change at all further into the season? Will the recommended upgrade also recommend durability upgrades? What about efficiency and quality control? Does it have a preference for minor upgrades, or will it also recommend major and ultimate upgrades?
