It's like a one out of ten in the scare rating. There's a bit of gore but not much. It's not very detailed. There's decapitations but it's just a bunch of red blood, not a lot of detailed guts or bones or anything like that.
There's probably only two jump scares in the game from what I can recall. One is optional(you can miss it), the other is scripted. Everything else is just incredibly loud and obnoxious noises. The "enemy" portions are basically crappy stealth instances where they can't see two feet ahead of them(You can literally walk past them -- walk, don't run) and there's pretty much just the one enemy type that can actually do anything to you.
This game simply isn't scary. It can be somewhat atmospheric but it's a poor man's Soma at the end of the day. Soma being from the studio who brought us Amnesia: The Dark Descent and ended up being more story driven and atmospheric at the cost of not being very scary(and I really loved Soma).
Even the Gameplay felt so boring sometimes.
I Think Bloober Team had made a great Job with Layers of Fear and with Observer, if you like the Setting, if you play it at the Night with Headphones, bring the Athmosphere to a new special Level.
Only Alien Isolation – just my opinion, cannot be beaten from the Throne of scary Horrorgames.
With the exception of "naked", I was playing Amnesia like this.
2 o'clock in the night my GF wakes up and goes to the bathroom - I don't hear a thing - see's light under the door to the livingroom where I'm playing and decides I need to be told in no uncertain terms to come to bed.
Flings the door open just to the right of where I sit - jumpscare of my life!!
And yeah, Observer is unsettling. Loving it so far.
