Case#628: Meeting Pieta and her little [spoiler] imaginary [/spoiler] friend Paulina.

The case is quite obvious, but there is one thing, that keeps me awake at night: Was there ACTUALLY any Paulina?
The first thing is: it's hard to believe autistic girl could totally heal her mental illness by simply communicating with the adult directly through thoughts, even though Pieta told that to us directly.
The second and the most important: in case we leave that connection be, the flat where we talked to the Paulina opens and... there is nothing in there, but a few chairs and a TOY with "high mental activity". Yeah, I scanned it.
So there comes my question again: was there a real autistic girl, or was that just some kind of old woman's alter ego? Or maybe some AI the guy brought to her to get the better apartment as a reward?
P. S. Also, did Pieta cheat this guy too by reporting him? I've read the letter he wrote while being imprisoned.

I believe there really was a girl at one point, as she is mentioned in emails and medical records on the computer where Pieta is. But since her body is not in the other room when you open it, it's hard to say if her conscience was just uploaded or if the body is jacked into another machine somehwere else, etc.

btw, the cat toy ("Mr Scooter") is an easter egg from their game "Layers of Fear". In that game the toy was somewhat alive, so that may be what the "high mental activity" was alluding to.

Well, all my knowledge on autism comes from the recently released Predator 4, so I feel I'm pretty educated on the subject, enough to know that, being autistic, that little girl should have been nothing short of a super genius with the ability to instantly master every piece of technology in that building, bend it to her will and use it to save the world.

The fact that she didn't, and couldn't, showed how pretty unrealistic this game was.

My understanding, given the achievement name "Body Snatcher" was that when you restore the connection Pieta takes control over Paulina's body and they leave the apartment - hence Dan's line "I hope you two find what you were looking for" and why it's empty.

Tthe "hidden" toy is rather interesting though I hadn't considered that Pieta was in the toy instead (nor did I know about the easter egg y2mckay mentions).

And yes, Pieta cheated Ono by reporting him. She told him that the paperwork for him to become a B Class citizen went through and instead had set him up as she was growing a conscious over overriding Paulina's consciousness (the original plan as I understood it) to take the body.

Fairly sure that some content was removed here, as in quite a few countries having the actual story-line fully in would definitely require a bit more than just a 18+ / Mature rating.

The Doves that they're selling are not Doves, which means the entire story is fairly horrific. i.e. Paulina was never really ill, her documents are forgeries, and Mr O deserves far worse than just imprisonment. Or, bluntly, they're using children as puppets / slaves


Was fairly shocked when I came across this one (although, it's rather obvious once you understand that Mind-Swapping tech exists in this universe).

Yep. I got the same feeling of some shady, illegal trafficking reading through them e-mails. Through the audio logs you hear Ono saying that Pauline "has what you need" - which, taking in consideration Pieta's and Ono's deal was something of an illegal like drug, it's safe to say he was experimenting intertwining people's minds to achieve some sort of euphoria. Like in the end Adam and Daniel's mind join. What Ono did not forsee was that both parties that were jacked together, Gained each other's memories and experiences. In Paulina's case, she was able to speak again and in Pieta was able to, what is alluded to mind-reading. You that Paulina can read minds because she know's Dan's name when he uses the comm in door 113 and is also overheard that she know's pieta's name through a sound recording while jacked in.

Upon replaying the game for the collectibles, I tried doing different choices. There IS a girl in room 113. Through dialogue, Pieta claims her desire to "merge" and stay with Paulina because her body is 'dying' and warns if the connection is restarted it would initiate a mindwipe, possibly on both, effectively turning them to vegetables. If you choose to reestablish the connection, the door to 113 will be open, suggesting that Paulina (and possibly pieta inside of her mind escaped). If you choose to reset the computer, the door will remain closed. Interestingly, if you reconnect the connection, when the door opens, there is no other electronic device that paulina could've been hooked up to, possibly an oversight of the writers/designers.

Damn, I have to say, this is alot more ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up than I originally thought.

I didn't make the connection about the "Doves" being children until reading this thread.

Going back and reading the Dove forum, it's really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. It seems like it's mostly centered around children sex slaves.

Ugh... especially the post about the 9 year-old, saying that she's growing too old for his tastes, and he prefers softer "hens". Really disgusting.

Ono is probably who procured Paulina through that website, but I have to say, Pieta really deserved to become a vegetable.

Also, I want to say, I think that Pieta had at least partial control of Paulina during the brief time that Dan and Paulina talked.

Because Paulina replied with two ages, 9 and 34, and occasionally spoke with two different voices.

However, I think that Pieta gave the room code to Dan because something was wrong, and she wanted someone to find her body in the helpless state.
