How to play the game in 21:9 [TUTORIAL]
The game doesn't support ultrawide aspect ratio out of the box. However, it's quite easy to fix it with some hex-editing and ini tweaks. In this guide I'll show you how to play the game in 21:9.

Tutorial:

  • First, you need to download the program called HxD (https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/), and install it.

  • After that, make a backup of your game's exe file (/Observer/TheObserver/Binaries/Win64/TheObserver-Win64-Shipping.exe), then open it with HxD.

  • Search for 398EE33F HEX values (there should be two of them), and replace both of them with 26B41740, if you want to play at 2560x1080 resolution. If you want to play at 3440x1440, change these values to 8EE31840 instead.

  • Save the changes, and quit the program.

The game should run in 21.9, but there's still something left to do. You need to change the FOV (Field of View) to a higher level in order to take full advantage of the wider screen (and to also avoid motion sickness).

  • Navigate to your AppData folder (\AppData\Local\TheObserver\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor). If you don't see it, check "show hidden files" inside Total Commander / Windows' File Explorer.

  • Open Engine.ini, and copy the following lines to the file:

    [/script/engine.localplayer]

    AspectRatioAxisConstraint=90

  • Save the changes, then make the file read-only. I reccommend 90 FOV, it's great for 21:9.

Old topic, but I could use some help with a 3840x1080 resolution.
Side note, it works with the Linux version too, running it in 3440x1440 myself.

Not sure how to derive the hex code from the resolution since it's not a straight up conversion. Maybe someone better than me at math/programming has an idea.
Thanks for responding, I found a set of hex codes for the vast majority of unusual resolutions on the Widescreen Gaming wiki. Worked like a charm. Now I'm just fiddling with the FOV to get it perfect.

Yeah because the said (21:9 support):

Im playing the game in VR on my vive pro at a screen resolution of 2880 x 2160 via VORPX im very happy with the quality other than some than some black bars at the top and bottom of the display. I want to set a 4:3 screen ratio, My understanding is even though 2880 x 2160 is a 4:3 screen resolution Observer has it default to 16:9?. I was trying to use "AB AA AA 3F" as my hex value i found from here http://www.wsgf.org/article/common-hex-values. When i open TheObserver-Win64-Shipping.exe HxD and search i cant find a "398EE33F" offset to modify. I also cant find the ini file to change the FOV anywhere, any help trying to get rid of the black bars would be apprciated.
Try another hex editor, as someone mentioned in a previous post. Config files location:

Thanks Dpanter i skipped page 2 to this thread sorry, I ended up finding the right option in the search options in the HxD "hex values" tab instead of the default "text-string" tab and made the changes i mentioned for 4:3 screen ratio and i found the FOV settings too which i read elsewhere max's out at 75 but i tried that then 110 and 110 looks perfect on my Vive pro, everything seems to be running really well. Im suprised how well Vorpx handles some of these games like they were meant to be in VR.

So I decided to finally buy Observer and then Vorpx, since they removed the hidden vr function that used to work by just addin -vr to the launch options. Sadly Vorpx doesn't seem to work for me either. I get a flat projection in my Oculus Rift, even when turning on Full VR in the Vorpx options. How did you manage to get this working on Vorpx?
Worked. Appreciate all those who helped. Although, I had to revert to original field of view personally.
FYI: the game is unlikely to ever gain native ultrawide support, but this thread contains a workaround.
