Underground cave - numbers and keys

I'm stuck on the puzzle in the underground cave where you need to change the key configuration using the 1-6 number panel to make 4 squares turn white and spin.
I can't seem to figure out the sequence/rules, any help would be awesome!

I believe this puzzle changes randomly every time it resets itself (after number of tries) so walkthrough won't help.
This might make it easier: the only numbers used in this puzzle are 1,2,3 and 6.
Make sure to use paper and pen for this puzzle to count numbers out one at a time.
Also, the paper on the right of the number board (with white and yellow paint marks) shouldn't be ignored.

glad you could solve the puzzle! This is one of the only puzzles in the game where a walkthrough can not help (the other being the simons says). Good luck on your journey underground :)

Dear developers:
Did this puzzle possibly change after the patch?
I hear a guy on youtube say he had a number 5 in the right combination.How is that possible? I've never had 4 nor 5 in the right combination after hours of testing it?

You should try playing the lottery then! :D We choose randomly between the six numbers for the four number combination.

Just can't figure out how the clues work for this. I've played mastermind but I can't see how this puzzle is like that at all, yet. Any number pressed first is white and the rest stay yellow. Perhaps there is something I haven't done yet?
EDIT: I think I found what I was missing, to check the guesses.
