Stone Wheel puzzle in Cave
Went into the cave, and did the first part of the stone wheel puzzle.

We're stuck on what seems to be the second half of it?

Have already tried:
rotating the numbers 180 degrees with the wheel (so top center is 14/6 and bottom center is 16/7), and doing the same thing, or in descending order, or with the overlay pattern as original or rotated, etc.
We think we've tried pretty much everything, maybe its just not solvable yet/without further items/information? A bit frustrated.

I'm stuck where you are as well. I'm thinking we need to go back for something else (but I could be totally wrong).

Btw, I don't have a save to go back to right before I solved the first part of the puzzle but maybe one of you can check whether in fact the whole disc turned 180°? Or was it only the outer ring?

Glad to know we're not alone! I am *pretty* sure both discs spun, but I tried solving it assuming only the outer disc did, and it still didn't work. I've tried probably 15-20 different permutations of raotate/not rotate for each of the numbr wheel and the overlay wheel, or ignoring the overlay wheel, etc.

Ok, I've tried every possible combination based on the key pattern, the orientation of the key pattern, the orientation of the disc numbers, and the order of numbers to press:
  1. original pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in upright orientation, low to high
  2. original pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in upright orientation, high to low
  3. origianl pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in turned orientation, low to high
  4. original pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in turned orientation, high to low
  5. original pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in upright orientation, low to high
  6. original pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in upright orientation, high to low
  7. origianl pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in turned orientation, low to high
  8. original pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in turned orientation, high to low
  9. opposite pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in upright orientation, low to high
  10. opposite pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in upright orientation, high to low
  11. opposite pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in turned orientation, low to high
  12. opposite pattern, pattern in upright orientation, numbers in turned orientation, high to low
  13. opposite pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in upright orientation, low to high
  14. opposite pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in upright orientation, high to low
  15. opposite pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in turned orientation, low to high
  16. opposite pattern, pattern in turned orientation, numbers in turned orientation, high to low
Now, if I didn't make any mistakes that would mean that there cannot be any connection between the pattern on the canves and the key combination. But if that was so, what else would there be to do on the island?

Btw, there is one more reference to the disc pattern on a red flag hanging close to the crystal lab. You can see it from the watch tower (especially with the blue crystal attached to the telescope) but it doesn't include a key pattern. Looking at all other options that I could find on the island they all appear to not work yet ... I really think that the next thing to do is to open the gate. But how?

The red flag is the trick.

I think this was the first misstep of the game, since it's not at all clear what you're supposed to do.

You should have in your inventory something that looks like a weird spike, which happens to fit perfectly into the telescope. And the red crystal happens to fit perfectly on top of the spike.

The rest should be obvious from there.

Thanks, will try right away ...

Just realized that you can see a piece of fabric in the cave that's the same as the flag. That was the hint.

Makes me feel a little better about the puzzle, but still probably my least favorite so far.

I was also stuck at the second part of this puzzle. Thanks for the flag tip.

Well, at least I did find the flag pattern ;)

Oof, that's a pretty tough one! Thanks for the heads up.

SPOILER ALERT: Part 2 of my video walkthrough which includes the stone wheel section: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N74TOxbx0s&list=PLrICs6fXG-8FglfFpE4QE5CQIzIavkorK&index=2

I found the red flag puzzle piece to be pretty much the most obtuse puzzle piece so far in the game. (I'm to the lower mechanics room now - almost done I think)

I only found the solution after watching Azralynn's walkthrough part 2 (found it outside of this post). Sadly the only part of the game where I needed to find an external source to figure out a puzzle.

I didn't notice a piece of the red flag in the room, but it's probably there. It might help if it were a little more prominent?

It seemed more intuitive to try what AngelKurisu and Innocentive tried, but then that was too obvious to be the right answer now wasn't it?

Although this part could use some work I think, I must say that this is the best puzzle game I've played since Myst and Riven.

.

Good idea!

I know there was a discussion about making the items a little bit easier to view or changing the angle of them.

I think this would help immensely in this puzzle. I took me forever to realize what the crystal torch holder was, but if I had seen the pattern on the top where the crystal slots in, I would've immediately tried putting the red crystal in all the places where I put the blue and orange crystal.

As it was, I only put it in the furnace and the alchemy lab, and only realized what the spike/torch handle did when someone helped me out with this puzzle.
