The War Galleon requires more hands on management of the various points of sailing when going after significantly smaller or larger ships but it can handle everything and the increased micromanagement of every point of sailing is actually a fun challenge. I enjoy the game mechanics a lot more when I'm using the War Galleon.
I captured my first 1st-rate with two War Galleons. The second War Galleon was just for the crew I needed. Took out the sails with chain shot then mortared the 1st-rate till the hull was severely weakened then very carefully approached the back of the ship where there are no canons being careful not to get boarded to take out the crew with Grape shot. Once it surrendered just loaded up crew from both Galleons plus had a second fully loaded ship on hand if I ran out of munitions.
Second favorite ship for me is the Man O'war but it just feels too sluggish and way too slow to turn especially upwind even alternating front and back sails. Smaller ships can outrun and outmaneuver you sometimes without you even getting one broadside in. Less cargo capacity means less ammunition when going up against larger ships you need to chip away at. The limited capacity is particularly frustrating when attacking ports. I usually have room to spare for additional cargo I might pick up or trade with my War Galleons.
Corvette's are a lot of fun too so long as you're not looking to capture larger ships though fully upgraded you'll have enough crew to capture a War Galleon. Corvette's can outmaneuver and sink about any ship and stocked primarily with mortars can even take ports.
Tried that, even sailed from port to port and cannot find it
1st rate slow but good firepower, 2nd rate medium Speed and Medium Firepower, Korvette (Brig) fast you gotta use tactics though.
Corvette is one of the best ships you can get early on and it holds up late in the game but if you've got the war Galleon nearly fully upgraded too use the corvette to capture some other ships to sell off so you can finish upgrading the War Galleon maybe capture a second. With two fully upgraded War Galleons you'll have the crew you need to capture 2nd and 1st-rates (provided you've got the map of Florida) and more versatile ships for any act of piracy or trade.
