And they're not otomes, but... The Walking Dead series (TellTale) has everything you're looking for: A LOT OF CHARACTERS DIE. It's similar to a visual novel because you can make A LOT of choices, but you have to kill your fair share of zombies. Completly easy, so don't worry about that. If you're more into epic fantasy... The Game of Thrones series from TellTale as well has a lot of death and angst, too. So much that it can be frustrating.
Hope this helps!^^
I loved both Dandelion and Nameless. Both are bittersweet. Even with the stat boosting in Dandelion I would consider it to be heavy plot based. I have seen a lot of reviews where people seem to have had a hard time with the stat raising aspect but I have never had issues. I personally liked Dandelion and Nameless more than I likes Mystic Messenger. (Unpopular opinion, I know)
Amnesia: Memories is another one I would recommend, though I wouldn't consider it as angsty as the others, but it's definitely not your standard fluff.
OZMAFIA! might be worth checking out. I've only played one route of this, as well, and it felt a lot fluffier to me than what I usually enjoy, but the other routes might be more to your taste.
These last two are on steam, as well, so you don't have to get a vita or anything, which is convenient!
Hopefully Kenka Bancho Otome from Spike Chunsoft is coming too.
OMG I heard a lot about Code Realize, I wish they will release a PC version of this game ç_____ç
They recommended you good otomes so far, I would also add Black Wolves Saga...I played it ages ago, but I still remember how dark was that otome.
