At the very beginning, you need to roll back a little so that the shadow of the falling ball touches the middle of your ball (or a little less) AND DO NOT JUMP. If you do it right, the CPU will fail and won't be able to hit the ball. Repeat as many times as possible - if the enemy hits the ball, it can be very difficult to win another round again.

In arcade mode, you may have to try a few times, because random bonuses can screw up this tactic.
