Hey Hell-farers,

It's Alexandra from Kitfox reporting in while David is away on vacation. Thank you to everyone who has picked up the game already and has shared your heisting adventures with us. The wins have been glorious and the losses have...also been glorious! If you haven't already, please give us a review on Steam. Even a single postive review makes a huge difference and helps narrative sickos find the game! We're also working on getting the soundtrack up on Steam so stay tuned for that.

Regarding the feedback on game difficulty

We've read all your feedback about the difficulty level and the lack of information when you make a character action/how the dice rolls work. We absolutely hear where you're coming from and understand that a little more information in-game would alleviate a lot of frustration. David needs a bit of a rest after working hard to get to launch. So please be patient. For a few weeks he's going to be taking a step back to really think about the game design, and your feedback, and see if there's any way to improve the experience in a way that doesn't ruin his vision of risk and uncertainty. After working on the game for years, it would be silly to rush into big changes before we're sure what effect they'll have. Thank you for playing -- and feel free to keep giving feedback and ideas, as we read them all.

What am I missing with the challenge mechanic?

I'm working my way through the tutorial and have managed to fail all but one die roll, and I don't know why. I'm picking things that /should/ be relevant, but they're all vaguely-worded enough that I can't tell if I'm making bad choices or just have abyssmal luck. All the rolls seem arbitrary, and there's no sign, even after the roll, of what effect the tile has on the die. What am I missing here?...

I’m taking a vacation, so there won’t be any updates for a bit. But please use “Send Feedback” from the game to let us know about anything that seems wrong. That goes into our tracking system and won’t fall through the cracks.

We did want to make sure our latest fixes are in your hands:

Suggestion to adjust RNG game feel without changing any mechanics

I see a lot of reviews hitting the game for its RNG, & I think a lot of that might be due to it not being clear what was "bad luck" vs a misplay. After assigning a skill to a check, it would be nice if the game showed you your odds as it starts rolling the dice. Telling players they made the right choice but still got unlucky, or telling them that they somehow won with a very unlikely check, would help a lot with the feel behind the randomness - as currently the flat "you lost" can pull you out of the ga...

Love the atmosphere, can’t grok the mechanics.

Bought this game on strength of Robin D Laws’ name in the credits. Absolutely love the atmosphere and writing, but I found that I’m bouncing hard on the mechanics – I’ve done five runs, and only one successfully. So the way the game system looks like to me is that I have characters with vaguely-defined traits, and you try to justify using them to overcome obstacles. A somewhat disappointing game. The idea is good, and the setting is unique enough - those are not the parts this game struggles with. Backgrounds look nice, even though plenty of those get reused.
The heists are decently well-written, even though I haven't tried all of them yet.

However, this offers very little in terms of gameplay, and everything you do is very affected by RNG. While yes, you can fail forward through most of the challenges, it simply feels bad to pick a perfect team for a route just to get shafted by the draw. One second characters brag about being great sailors and demonologists, next, they're failing simplest challenges, drawing "X is an alcoholic" or neutral cards.

Next, it's not clear how a challenge is affected by specific cards, and insight tokens are very rare. I understand that no writer can predict how every single player could interpret the card<->challenge suitability, but the current system isn't fun as well. I wouldn't mind buffing insights to a point where you can reliably use at least one per encounter. Like, what do you mean "X noticed an opening" is a better card for climbing a tree than "Y is strong"?

The risk/reward for each encounter feels very uneven. You can go through a heist perfectly, mess up one or two encounters/challenges and straight up invalidate an entire run, a short story worth of reading, and to get back to that point you gotta not only trudge through the same exact challenges, but also deal with the RNG's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. On the other hand, some of the encounters feel pointless, adding little flavour other than "oh hey, the characters are supposed to have a backstory, let's meet a rival team and awkwardly shove it in".

First off: I’m a huge fan of Glorantha, King of Dragon Pass (KODP), and Six Ages. I love the storytelling style and the world's overall atmosphere of these games. Even though I would have preferred a Six Ages 3 to bridge the narrative gap between Six Ages 2 and KODP, I knew from the start that Thousand Hells would be a day-one purchase for me.

Thousand Hells plays a bit like the Hero Quests found in those other games. I actually considered the Hero Quests in KODP to be a weak point because they required too much memorization. Things improved slightly in Six Ages, and here it feels like that mechanic has been perfected. Unfortunately, that’s all about it. There isn't much of a meta-game; the banter is nice but gets old quickly or sometimes doesn't fit for the situation and there are too few hero portraits. The number of Hells is far below a thousand, too... while you can combine the Hells and storylines, but I fear it have much fewer replay value than KODP or Six Ages. Right now I think, why should I play the same heist again? It simply feels very bare-bones and Early Access rather than like a fully fleshed-out game. That said, the artwork is good and it does build some atmosphere, though nowhere near the level of the Glorantha series. Honestly, I’m a bit disappointed. I’ll keep playing it for a while, and if more content gets added, I’ll reconsider this review.

EDIT: I played the same storyline twice now.. the talk from the characters is actually the same. I thought, the arguments of the characters would be based on their skills and personality like in KODP. Thats awful.

Imagine you're playing a TTRPG, and the GM explains a scenario and offers you four choices. You pick one. The DM rolls behind the table, and then explains that your character messes up and you lose the encounter. Was the roll low? Did you choose poorly? No way to know! Next scenario!

The writing is good, but the game is simply not fun. I'm joining with a few other reviewers who are sad to be returning it.

Scripted loss? But why?

My battered and depressed party completed their task and was on it's way out of Hell. They lost a challenge and one of them (not the leader) finally refused to go on. And then I got party wipe in two lines of text. "Some hellish things took the poor chap and then you die. The end." Why there was no challenge? No heroic final stand? Not even an option to ditch him. Very abrupt and confusing. As if Gandalf fell to the bottomless pit and then everyone else was shot to death by orcs. Game is great nonetheless...

Discussion on RNG and brainstorming

I love this game! The story, music, and ambience are excellent as always from this team, and I've been glued to it. But I want to open a discussion on something that's keeping me at 90% instead of 100%: the RNG. I actually love that losing is fun here — more games should do that. But I feel I'm at 95% failure rate for hours of play, and it's starting to feel less like "hell is hard" and more like there's no way to get better.
