How to move up in Title ranking?

How do you move up the title rankings in my career mode? I've been a contender for the IC title for almost 2 years and I'm only ranked 4th. I've call out the champion and the top contenders on several ocassions and my ranking still isn't increasing. Has anyone had any success with winning single titles? The ranking system seems to be broken

From what i can gather from the console forum, Popularity = Rankings

It took friends of mine over 100 hours to finish career mode on the xbox one version, with that being said, the game is extremely slow to progress in career no matter how good you are doing. To make the most progress you have to get into rivalries with a contender that is only 1 or two spots at most above you. In other words, you can't be ranked 5th or 4th and expect to get a title shot any time soon. Also make sure to do good with promoting your character. Change T-shirt often to get more fans and popularity thus bigger matches. Also winning the promo's should help too in ranking over time. Don't waste your time getting into rivalries with the champion until you are ranked 2nd i'm pretty sure it won't do anything.

keep getting to into rivalries with the guy 1 rank above yu and try to put on as much 5 star games as possible and once rank 3 challange the champ ! Worked for me !! Am US champ and ranked 8 for IC title !

Does anyone know if you need to start a rivalry with the WWE Champion before Wrestlemania if you won the Royal Rumble and are going for the WWE Championship or is that match automatic at WM?

Thanks for the tips guys but I finally moved up to rank 3 and currently have a promo battle against the IC champ but the game keeps crashing whenever I try to complete the promo segment. I guess for now I have to wait until the next patch i s released to progress through career mode. It really sucks because now I'm in a position to challenge for the title but my game won't stop crashing.
