Beachhead 2000

Beachhead 2000

This game doesn't work
Why was this game even allowed to be released on Steam if nothing has been done to ensure it works on modern computers?

You're not alone. I was wondering the exact same thing. I thought both of these Beach Head games were going to be optimized for their Steam release. Sadly this isn't so. They run (or more correctly don't run) exactly the same as the retail versions I've owned for ages. One of the reasons I was so hyped about them appearing here was I was under the impression they would be fixed for modern pc's. It's all I can do to seek a refund for both unfortunatley. This is sad.

I don't get why devs are allowed to do this... this problem's become more and more frequent with Greenlight and all. Most egregiously so i would say with Greenlight. Particularly last year. There's so many amazing classic 90s games i'd like to see make it to steam, but they're relegated to the undercurrent of the waves and flooding of the garbage that makes it through.
This is why the gaming SJW youtubers complain about it so much. I hope whatever Valve has in store for Greenlight's replacement is a better system.

I ended up refunding both games and now I see they have Beach Head : Desert War available as well. I'm not taking the chance although that is the one game I do not own the retail version of. Was really looking forward to these games from my youth.

Here's what I've got on their Facebook:
--
"These are old games and we released them as they were, they were never originally intended to run on windows 10 os. However with this in mind we are develooing a new game in the BeachHead: Series, BeachHead:2020 for more information on the new title please visit our website "

Have to admit, not a good attitude at all.

This is what they told me when I emailed them.

"We are currently coming up with a patch to fix the issues and we will release an announcement when we fix the issue. We did not see this issue coming as it works on most modern pc's that we have. Please accept this steam code for BeachHead: 2002 and be sure to run in compatibility mode or change the setting in the ini file for the configuration."

I went ahead and purchased Beach Head : Desert War with the reufnd I received from the other two games. I can verify it works on the following systems by running in compatibility mode set for Windows XP (Service Pack 2) : Vista, Windows 7, & Windows 8.1.

As far as I can tell the highest resolution is 1024x768 and the mouse control is a bit wonky, but it is playable otherwise. I will try higher resolutions when I get around to messing with the ini. files contents. Just a heads up for those interested.

Let me sum it up for you guys: The initial round of releases was simply to get the titles onto steam, as they were at release.

Thats means compatibility wise you should have no problems whatsoever with every single other title in our game library... You created this expectation Biggus Dickus, and never was it our intention to remaster the old game. Where did you get this impression? We were always working on the next iteration in the series: Beachhead2020. An entirely new title. Perhaps if the title read Beachhead2000 Remastered or HD, I'd have understood such a misunderstanding.

If you wanted a more compatible version, i'm glad you found the other beachhead titles, which as they are work with windows 7, 8 and 10. No problems that aren't direct X related.

Just look at their reviews by comparison. They are the legitimate sequels and every title we worked on after Beachhead2000 shares this overall compatibility.

I hope that this explanation should suffice.

We're only human, I thought personally we had done a good job of explaining what our intentions were here. What minimum requirements meant versus recommended requirements.

You have our ears as developers. I hope you can recognize that the compatibility issues in the titles following 2000 are non-existant provided you have directX and a compatible video card.

Thank you for responding to us about these problems. I personally have had a problem with 2002 as well, and i could recreate it and share with you if you want, but if not and you guys are working on it, i can be fine with that until some patch rollouts. Thank you for bringing it to steam regardless.

They should have put more effort into making the old ones work, maybe including dll wrappers to make the experience better on modern systems, rather than put most of their effort into their "new" desert gunner one. Sad thing is devs extremely rarely learn lessons...

Well, if they released these old games for free, no one have rights to really complain about anything. But we paid for those games, and we are not even asking to increase the resolution or what, the problem is the game can't even run on Windows 10

Has anyone tried to run the game through virtual box/vmware? I believe it works fine on XP and prior from what I remember.
pacxel Aug 11, 2019 @ 2:54pm
i did get beachead 2000 to work. but in requires windows vista 32bit and and you need to copy the files from the steam directory to a working vista pc. I think it works the same for all the games. not sure if it works with virtual box i think you need a real vista pc or windows xp. 32bit only. just go in the folder you copied and theirs another folder named beachead and double click beachead16.exe and it should work. same for the other games.

with beachhead desert war and beachead 2002 copy the files to a real vista pc. look for the folder "BH2GAME" and run "BH2.EXE" when the games are over it will crash to the windows vista or xp desktop just run the game again for another match.
