Private worlds?

Greetings. I've read in several places that no one plays this game anymore. But if any of you drops by here, I'd like to know if I'm able to run the game without depending on third party servers, and then if friends can connect to my private server somehow. Not sure what the game allows, if it needs some specific servers, or I can make my servers (like in Windward). Thanks in advance!...
