Another (perhaps better) way that has been proposed is to have a pickup system like diablo where you just click on the item to pick it up. But this will be quite a bit of work prob, if you have a good idea that would not take too much time feel free to propose it.
So there's currently no picking items by clicking on them and that's off the table, and there shouldn't be buttons, whatever that means.
It seems like a preferable solution would be to use interfaces that are already in the game then. I'm not sure i've seen all UI behaviors yet, but when the character touches a container (like a vase or a chest), its contents show up in a small window from which we pick items we want.
Now what if the same window would show up when we are near items lying on the ground?
Thanks to auto-loot which is currently in game, there already should be (i assume) a function that scans a small space around character for items and transfers them to player's inventory.
So all it would take is to use that same mechanic to show those items in a window like we see when we open a container, and from there we will be able to pick whatever items we need.
To sum up the way it would work:
1. turn off auto-looting in settings
2. step near item(s) lying on the ground, like we would normally do now with auto-loot
3. a small window shows up, containing all the items auto-loot would've detected from that spot
4. we pick whatever items we need from a window, like we do with a container
5. we go on and the window disappears like usually.
The option that currently prevents auto-looting while moving will even work with it as well, so the items window shows up only if we stop near them.
Idea itself isn't new - i'm not sure when was the last time i saw it in a vanilla game, but there are definitely mods like this. E.g. a mod for Witcher 3 that scans for lootable items in close range and shows all the contents in one window.
I hope i was able to explain it clearly enough. Can elaborate if needed. Thanks for responding!
