Auto healing, all or nothing please?
Any way we could get the auto use of healing and life potions tweaked? I love that they kick in automatically, but twice now I've gotten too relaxed and relied on it with a dozen in my inventory, get love tapped, and the game auto uses the one healing water for a few HP instead of an actual healing potion, causing the 2nd hit to swat me down (this instance was a horned worm out of nowhere while fighting other worms). It's really aggrivating thinking you have a buffer and feels like the feature is unreliable at best.

Just wondering if this is just the way it's gonna be and I'm overreacting for having 2 of my best runs in a row fail from this, or if there's a better way.

Thanks.

You are absolutely right. The auto heal should pick the best available option, I will check the code, because this was obvioiusly a bug.

Hmm, I think I suggested originally to use healing water potions to also heal you if you get low on HP. But technically this is not an issue, the real issue is:

The autohealing threshold, the game starts healing you around 30% that's why you can still die if you have 30% HP + 1 and an enemy hits you for more then your remaining hit points. I suggested a slider so you could adjust this setting. Not sure if it will make it in though :P

Checking beforehand if a blow will kill you and then healing you might be too easy, but having a slider where you can determine when you want to be healed is a lot more "fair". If you put it at 50% you prob will never have such an issue since there are very little enemies who do 15+ damage. (If they even exist)

It's also hard to develop a smart system for this. If you base what potion to use on the last hit taken the system might overreact if you got hit by a hulking ratmen and then hit by a rat and it uses a full healing potion to heal you.

And to be very honest with you, it's partly our fault (the player) for relying too much on this build in mechanic to save our life. When in doubt you should use healing stuff yourself. I have have had my fair Yet Another Stupid Death's because of this myself.

Actually the system is a little smarter than you think. If you you are hit by a blow that doesn't take you under the threshold, but is powerful enough that it would kill you if you take another blow like that, then auto heal kicks in.

I hear what you're saying Elias about being our fault, but that's kind of what I mean about maybe looking into tweaking the mechanic. Every game before that was teaching me to not waste a quick inv slot on healing potions. Then suddenly getting killed in 2 shots like that with literally a dozen healing and 4 life potions supposably backing me up was a bit of a suprise mechanically.

Thanks for listening JD, maybe it gets wonky via crits? Can enemies even crit?

BTW, still loving the everliving crud out of this. I've hooked 2 others on it in the last week as well. Hoping to finally finish a run sometime soon!

You still don't need to waste a quick inventory slot on them: Just slam pause. I do that any time I want to use something that isn't in the quick bar or whenever I'm surprised.

Hotkeys might work too. I've never used them. I'll try them out next game.

I honestly just realized that about 20mins ago. Hotkeys work great! And resulted in letting me live long enough for my first amulet escape! http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/83718997480127211/CB81523FC576229E19371F0D8ADCBAA96D0F7CFA/

Yes enemies can deal criticals. But still the healing water should never have been a priority over the healing potion or life potion.
