AM Model Viewer

Issues opening Collada .dae files
So I have my collada files (.dae.) they appear in the directory, but they never actually open...I did notice under the square box and floor you have hidden a human figure. Any Suggestions, Is the main reason O bought this app was to view my 3D models within VR

"Also are you saying you saved your dae with Blender?"

Yes, I have used Blender and exported in dae format. However the dae exporter in the current version of blender doesn't work properly (It doesn't correctly link the materials to the model)

Hi, here is what I have found:

Sphere:

- DAZ studio is using a part of the Collada spec that I haven't supported (polygons with more than 3 vertices)

Workaround:

- Importing then exporting the sphere from Sketchup or Blender will produce a dae file that the model viewer then shows correctly.

Large Model:

- The large model has a lot of meshes with more than 64000 vertices. These meshes aren't rendered because my rendering engine (Unity3d) doesn't support meshes this big.
- I tried the import/export approach with the large model. Sketchup got stuck on the export. Blender succeeded; but because many of the meshes are over 64k, much of the resulting model doesn't appear in the model viewer.

What I am going to do:

- I can't solve the 64k mesh limit, unless Unity starts supporting larger meshes.
- I can implement a fix that converts complex polygons into simpler ones. This is currently my number 1 thing to fix in the next release.

Thanks very much for your input on this
This sounds very promising, I will try the Sketchup and Blender work around you suggest. I truly hope you can solve the DAZ Studio issue, as this software is fantastic when it comes to creation of scenes and Figures. I also like they way you are thinking regarding simplification of the poly's. Would be really good to give a specific work flow showing how to get a model into the viewer with materials. I can work with you on what application works best. You might try the DAZ workflow, since the DAZ is free, and you wont go wrong for supporting the dae format out of DAZ, besides you might even find an opportunity awaits you :-) In addition I work a lot with Keyshot, Catia and Solidworks...if you can get this viewer working within the 4 workflows mentions your team will have a home run. File Formats most beneficial are .fbx, .dae, .obj and .duf.

Thanks, Yes I have downloaded DAZ studio. I wanted to see if there were any export options that would fix the problems (I don't think there are). There is also a very neat tool called Collada Refinery that allows problems like this to be fixed. In the mean time i'll work on the fix. Thanks for the offer of assistance, it would be much appreciated. I only have Blender and Sketchup (and now DAZ studio) so information about other modelling tools and Collada would be really useful.

File formats: I have a solution for obj, but disabled it. An obj model is a single mesh, so the 64k vertex limit meant my solution was very limited. .skp and .fbx are probably the most logical next steps. They also have SDKs so it might not be a big job. I'll start paying attention to .duf. Thanks once again for your feedback.
outstanding !!!!
I would also ask if you plan to allow adding/loading multiple models into the Viewer ?

Yes, that is something i'd like to add. Technically is won't be too hard. It is more about building the UI.
I have experienced problems with DAE files as well. Here is a link to several files exported to DAE from Chief Architect 8.0 software. These files open perfectly inside of SIMLAB software, with no errors. In AM Model viewer, many faces or objects are missing... https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gs3swn6obwq6h6h/AAAtPXdfiRE0rQhEzR6Bp674a?dl=0

Thanks for the feedback, I've not used the output from Chief Architect 8.0 before, so your files will be really useful for developing the product. I'll investigate in the next few days.

Thanks very much for the models. I have fixed the bug and uploaded a Version 1.2.1 of the product on Steam. The new version loaded all of your models OK on my machine. They look very good, however some of the flat images (trees) don't have transparency, so they end up looking like billboards. Is this what you would expect?
