I heard that after CC died, he was tested by re-establishing the same conditions (Dead child + Animatronic) to somehow resurrect him
(At the end of Fnaf 4, the fredbear plush was saying "I'll will put you together". In SL we learn that that plush is watching us because it has a camera in eye and its watches CC. And it's from William's place. That's why we can say that the FreadBear plush represents William.)

So Scott himself has said that afton killed over 80 people, directly and indirectly , the reasoning at first is he blamed his business partner Henry for the malfunction of fredbear that killed the crying child(aftons youngest son) and around the same time period his daughter died from baby, it sent him into a downward spiral and one night he was driving by the fnaf 1 pizzeria when he saw Henry’s daughter, that’s when he decided that he would get even with Henry and so started the whole thing, he kinda got a rush from it so he kept doing it, stuffing all the bodies into the animatronics, that’s when he figured out about the souls controlling the animals, he discovered remnant, a sort of Liquid Metal that the souls were bonded to when afton scrapped the animals for parts and melted them down, he then became obsessed and started experimenting more, but he needed more souls, eventually the 5 kids cornered him and he climbed into the spring Bonnie suit, when it suddenly snapped on him and killed him, but his soul took control of it, and spring trap was born, this happens within the span of about 30 years, where the fnaf 3 location fazbear frights actually takes place in 2023 and it is burned down at the end of the game, some years into the future the pizzaplex is built on top of the old grounds and the same things happen pretty much, all due to William afton

I mean, William Aftons Wife is a fictional character and never has been improved by Scott Cawthon. There are many names for the wife like Rosa, Clara, dumb other names that people says thats what her name is but it's not but also if she was Ballora, there would have been a scene of a mini game that shows Williams Wife and show how she died. And yeah, William Afton killed over 80 people improved on Scott Cawthon directly and which he uses his evil mind to trick Henry and his workers, making them not notice him killing people.

I think it was discovering remnant and seeing the possibility for immortality.

Yes. He lost his entire family and everything that he ever loved. Killing the kids distracted him from his pain. Even though it distracted him from his pain temporarily, it kept getting worse, and worse, and worse, until the souls took over and stopped him.

Of course...he "always" comes back...so he'll be around for longgggggggggggg to come in the future.
