I went ahead and looked up the video for that very spot, because I got so frustrated. Then I found out I was doing it right. Go ahead and look at it for yourself.
The problem now is that Death seems to be "heavier" than in my old memories... Its statue form reaches the cliff with the charged portal... but in front of the grid, not behind. So when I unsplit the souls, well, I'm still blocked inside the room... with the closed grid in front of me. Has anyone experienced this bug?
I found a way around :
Instead of splitting my soul in the middle of the room, i did it on the edge of the openning gate. The cinematic of the falling statue stayed the same but it gave me the extra length i needed to pass the grid.

In 2021, same as mhark'alarghaal, I complete the puzzle with the soul split and charged portal but the statue is launched on the wrong side of the grid. So when i come back to the real form the grid closes before me. Any idea ?

Lower your max fps to 60
My game was doing what the previous post described, launching across the room, stalling in the air for a fraction of a second, then falling a few inches too short of the gate.
lowered the FPS to 60 and made it first try.
I think the positioning on the gate Requiem described was coincidental (glad it worked for him, but i wasn't as lucky)
(FPS did help then too, I just didn't know how I did it, so since I couldn't re-create it, I just left this discussion to rot).
Thank you for solution!
