Can't jump gap, but there's a blue glowing spiked thing?

Early in the game, I found an area that I'm not sure how to get to. The only way that looks possible is jumping across a gap that I can't cross. I even picked up the mid-air dash ability, but it wouldn't let me go far enough.

At the midway point, there is a flagpole with some spiked, blue, blue glowing thing on it. Is this some kind of anchor point that will allow me to swing across or something? Is it an ability I won't get for a while and will have to come back for later?

Yes, it is. There will be many areas that are unaccessible until you find a special item or ability.

Thanks, I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to miss something that I wouldn't be able to come back for! I'll keep it in mind and head back when I have the ability.
