Save and Import Enhancements and Stability Improvements

This update provides a number of fixes to issues that have been reported, including

Full save backwards compatibility - old saves will now be upgraded to new save format automatically
Fixed several issues preventing game to launch for some users (windows only).
You can now choose which features to import: roads and railways, buildings, land and water, and optional terrain. Import progress, cancellation, and retries are clearer. Fixed import options not appearing from the main menu.
Significantly improved stability of import workflow. This should especially help with lower end hardware and RAM requirements.
Improved hillside-building placement, roof selection, terrain and water display, and handling of memory limits when opening large maps.
Windows now defaults to DirectX 12. You can switch to Vulkan in Video settings and restart to apply. For startup troubleshooting, use --vulkan or --dx12 in Steam Launch Options.
Minor enhancements to develop workflow and traffic (more to come)

Thank you all for your feedback and support for the game in the first week!

This update includes major improvements to OSM data imports, added individually styled roofs and walls, and improved develop tool preview.

Major changes

Moved imported projects to compressed .mcz file format with recoverable incremental saves.
Reduced imported map storage and memory requirements and improved loading/export performance.
Added roofs and independent wall/roof colors (doesn't apply to OSM or DLC).
Expanded develop tool with editable live previews, live measurements, rectangle shape, and improved neighborhood layouts and fill.
Added copy, cut, and paste and direct editing across most objects.
Traffic is now derived from building density.
Redesigned the start menu and implemented bundled starter map.

Major bug fixes

Large .osm.pbf imports crashing or creating excessively large caches.
Maps getting stuck in an endless Rendering… loop.
Incorrectly reported save failures in some cases.
Terrain smoothing creating seams and ugly road geometry.

Other fixes and refinements

Fixed roads appearing too thin at certain view angles.
Fixed rippled roads appearing in certain angles.
Improved workflow for divided roads.
Reduced likelihood of tiny perimeter roads, tiny fragments, and disconnected endpoints from develop tool.
Reduced narrow developments producing unusually small houses.
Improved building selection box and dragging behavior.
Increased develop building preview count and improved preview performance.
Numerous UI tweaks and improvements (more to come).

After the first day of early access, I have learned a lot and I appreciate everyone who looked or decided to try the game. I have made a number of enhancements based on feedback, and much more to come.

New starter town and tutorial.
Improved station and port placement.
Overhauled the develop workflow.
More consistent tool panels, snapping, and shape options.
Refined main menu and clearer warnings for large map downloads.
Saved-map Trash with permanent deletion.
Major usability improvements around the inspector.
Many small bugfixes and enhancements based on initial feedback. More to come!

Thanks for being here on day 1! MapCity will only get better from here.

I was given the opportunity to test the game out a few days before release. It's definitely early access, but I am enjoying it so far. One thing to note is that to play anything other than a blank map, you will need to download the associated region's map data, which can be over 150gb for the North America region. Hopefully the regions can be split into more manageable sizes before too long.

On to the game itself. There are a ton of options and tools available to build and modify the world. The UI could use some work, some of the options are buried in menus, and some menus have an overwhelming number of options. Many options have tooltips. There is no tutorial yet.
The gameplay is more of a sandbox right now, with statistics, but not very much simulation going on yet. There is more planned, but that part is not implemented at the time of this review.

i am saying, this has potential but it's in current state very clunky and not really what i expected, for now.
I might buy this again a year later but just now im not really getting into it, sorry.

Great for early access. Took me a bit to figure out most of the tools, but I am very impressed and excited for what's to come in the future. A tutorial is definitely needed, although I was able to figure out many of the tools myself. For now it's a great sandbox tool for map lovers and city lovers who don't care much for the city-manager kind of gameplay of cities skylines.
Running this on my laptop was surprisingly smooth, and viewing the city in 3D doesn't hurt performance that bad as long as I am zoomed out.
Maybe I haven't found it yet, but more guidelines and tools for symmetry would be useful.
Overall looking forward to future development progress although the game is entirely playable currently.

Hi - any chance of having the game generate random maps or would that be too complicated to implement? Already bought the game, love the concept, I would love to have random maps the size of a nation already generated!
