If you fancy doing video it would be appreciated. I wish I was as in to coding as I was 30 years ago - I might have been tempted to try and find out where thd problem was and either patch it or contribute a fix to Proton. Too old now, I don't have the tools or the knowledge for this platform :(
Just for a moment I thought someone with modern coding skills might have seen this thread and fixed the problem for me - but no such luck.
For whatever it's worth I used a Bluetooth keyboard to change the in-gamd control option to GamePad. I've been spoilt by modern two-stick shooters which allow you to shoot in a different direction to that of travel, but once I re-learnt the minimal controls I was well away. Until I decided to see if the game working was repeatable.
Oh well - it gives me hope that a fix is possible - so fingers crossed 🤞
That said, I think I've cracked it. Here's what I did using Stable release.
If you installed it, uninstall it before you begin here.
If you're in BPM, (Deck "Gaming Mode") restart to Desktop and plug-in a keyboard and mouse for the desktop part.
Now, from the Steam window, (use 2nd icon) configure BZB before you install.
GENERAL TAB -- Select the stock resolution: 1280x800
COMPATIBILITY TAB -- Tick the force box and select Proton Experimental
Close configuration, then download and install, it will now run in that proton pack automatically.
Once you see it convert to Play button, try it once. You should see the launcher appear. (graveyard backdrop with some headstones: 'wrench' for settings, play and 'X') Try clicking the 'play' headstone and you'll see what usually happens. (DeepSix logo, then crash ... but if it does run, it will be lo-rez and letterbox, just exit this time)
This should leave you back at the Steam window, looking at BZB page again.
Enter BZB Configuration, go to Local Files and click Browse...
(If you've ever been into Steam/steamapps/common, this should be pretty familiar to you. If not, hang tight, it make take a few tries for this to make sense.)
You're in the main folder for BZB executable, and you'll find the settings.xml file here. Use the Kate editor (by default) or your fave txtedit. The color-mapping should show you the settings clearly.
"Resolution" should have 640x480 on the same line, change it to the Deck standard: "1280x800"
Change the line that says "Windowed" from a "1" to "0"
Gameplay might improve without a couple of older f/x techniques, no longer native to DirectX. Some f/x will appear as black boxes in-game, so you may as well disable them by changing values on these lines to zero ("0"): "Decals" and/or "Giblets"
Save and close settings.xml
Now, here's the magic part -- the suspected cause for the crash is how the launcher exits and takes the Proton environment down with it, rather than allowing the game to run. So now, let's just change that launcher to the actual game exe.
RENAME BZB Launcher.exe to BZB Original Launcher.exe
RENAME BZB.exe to BZB Launcher.exe
Simple, no?
Now, exit the folder window and try the Play button.
(this might NOT work, but it may still work in BPM)
Go back into BPM (Gaming Mode) and try it from there.
NOTE: If it seems sketchy, or hitches up a lot, go back to the BZB configuration and change the Proton environment to the latest release. (7.06 here) You can do this without resorting to Desktop mode this time.
For controls, I might suggest GamePad Mouse Trackpad if you're using the Deck itself to play, but this game was originally made for KBM, so you might try hooking those up, too.
Currently, I have a dock with KBM connected and it seems to work fine for either KBM or gamepad. It's been launching every time!
