[Sorcery 2] Gaunlets?

So after finished Part 4 multiple times I've decided to start an entire new playthrough with as little combat as possible, and now I am at the Dwarfstown in Khare. Thing is, I always choose the Chainmail Gaunlet because I know it increase Combat Skill by 1.
But since this is a non-combat oriented playthrough, I am wondering what's the effect of the Leather Gaunlet? If anyone can answer this then thanks a lot!

The Leather Gauntlets lower Combat Skill by 1.

I have the chainmail gauntlets but in my inventory they have a "?" Instead of any bonus value? Do I eventually have to have them appraised or should they have immediately have a bonus?

They will immediately have the bonus, it just doesn't show to keep you guessing for a bit after you buy them.

What does this mean? Is 'combat skill' the same as 'strength'? So the leather gauntlets are actually a NERF/SCAM? I don't really get it.
