In case you want an extra challenge. Oh and there's a mod that adds in D-sides, including one for Farewell.

Basically for the same reason why Chapter 9 Farewell exists - it's the extra challenge for culmination of your journey. C-sides used that concept before the update, so now their purpose is to torture yourself and train for Farewell to be prepared for it's difficulty.

You don't have to play them. They're just an extra challenge for people who feel like it.
Also, if it helps, they're much shorter than the B-sides — maybe three or four rooms per C-side.
