This is either a problem with the way you press directional keys/buttons, the way your keyboard sends directional keys, or the way your controller works.
A crouch dash requires having zero downwards momentum and letting go of the down button during the second, third, or fourth frame of the dash.
To do a wavedash, you need to keep down pressed the entire time. If you're playing on a controller, maybe the zone that's considered "diagonal" doesn't correspond to your expectations. In that case, you might want to try to mess with Steam Input (Library -> Right-click on game -> Properties -> Controller).
If you're playing on keyboard, try keeping the "down" key pressed longer.
