(Unsolved) Can't change keyboard keybindings in Celeste
Hey everyone, I bought Celeste today but I feel like something weird is happening with my game. Because of the layout of my keyboard I have to change the controls because it's painful to press C for jump and the arrow keys for movement.

But entering the keybinds menu (which exists), I couldn't change anything at all
For example Jump which is default "c", highlighting and selecting it (pressing Enter) a window pops up stating "Press Key For Jump". But I can try to press any key without success. After a few seconds of desperately trying every key on my keyboard, the window closes and it's still "c".

I tried manually editing the controls in the Celeste.settings file in the "Saves" folder, but the game simply overrides in real-time all my changes when starting the game back to default. I tried setting that file to read-only, but the game becomes unable to save progress displaying the message "Unable To Save", with two options I can pick: "Try Again" or "Continue Without Saving". But even changing something and putting it into read-only, I still can't use the keys I set.

Lastly, one weird thing I noticed is this. One key (or set of keys) the game does recognize and accept as it should any other key, which is alt+tab. While the window says "Press Key For Jump", where pressing any other key does not have any effect at all, pressing alt+tab changes the keybinding to "Oem Copy", and the function is carried out when alt-tabbing into the game. The only way to "Jump" one single time is using this keybinding is tabbing out and back in to the game.

This is pretty much all I managed to find out, I have no idea why or how this is happening, everyone else seems to be able to change keybindings like normal, one Let's Play I watched the first episode of just opened the menu and put Space for Jump with no problems, people mention their favorite key setups. So it obviously works for other people.

If you're still having problems, one solution could possibly be to open the settings.celeste file in Steam\steamapps\common\Celeste\Saves and then manually tweaking them there.

Thank you for taking the time :) However I had already tried doing that.
Ultimately I decided to purchase an Xbox 360 controller and play the game with that.

Hi, it says you need a program to open the settings.celeste file, and I can't find one.

Any text editor will do.

Someone else should confirm this, but I was having this same problem and it solved itself after I fixed some steam sync issues with Celeste. I was able to change my keybindings normally on another device.

The most recent person to have had this problem had it solve itself after they restarted their computer.
You could also try verifying the integrity of game files. (Library -> Right-click on game -> Properties -> Local files -> Verify integrity of game files)
It might be because your laptop language setup is not set to English. Try going to control panel > change date, time, or number formats > administrative > change system locale, and select English. At least it solved for me.

Another way is to right-click celeste > properties > compatibility, check "run in compatibility mode" and select "windows 8" (or whichever works). This way you don't have to change the language setup.
